Is Lisa's "Tabasco-Tongue" correction wrong? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

So I'm sure by now we have all been able to see Lisa Whelchel on
Good Morning America this week defending her use of Tabasco Sauce on her children's tongues when they used profanity or were disobedient, a tiny dash to deter them. What do you think of this? Is this wrong or cruel? Does it prevent them from misbehaving? Or is it another "brilliant idea"?

I missed that episode, unfortunately.

I love Lisa Whelchel and Im not saying shes a bad mom but she became a little too religious and shes becoming too weird LOL Thats what i think!

well, it is her kids, if it works with her kids without any emotional scars in the process. Good for her.

I do agree with NancyMarc, I like Lisa, but I'd like her a little better if she wasn't so in-your-face about religion. It's good to pay attention to God's presence in your life, but Lisa seems to take it a little too extreme. Signs of this happened even back when she was on FOL, think back to "The First Time" and how Lisa 100% refused and resisted to be in that episode, instead of seeing the loss of virginity as a rite of passage everyone goes through, and even if Lisa doesn't agree with it, it's something that happens anyways.

I would have taken the hot sauce over being beaten by my dad with the belt anyday. Those kids have it damn easy.

No kidding. I got spanked. Hard. I mean, you didn't WANT to do whatever it was again after my mom got a hold of you...

And the one time mom DID do something other than spanking, it was the old "wash your mouth out with soap" trick....I'd take tabasco sauce over that anyday...of course...I like tabasco sauce...so, that wouldn't really be punishment for me...that's the probably I have with the punishment---if the child is used to eating spicy foods---it's not going to do a bit of good---especially if it's only a tiny drop of the stuff.

I agree with those who said she has gone too extreme with her religion. Sometimes on her website she will write something about one of her kids and the next thing you know she is typing 7 paragraphs of quotes from the bible. And she really should have been on "The First Time" episode, even if Blair took the opposing viewpoint of the other characters, which producer Irma Kalish said she would have done. They originally wanted Blair to be the one who loses her virginity. Kim Fields, who is also a Christian, had no problems with the episode and even commended them for mentioning contraceptives. "becoming a woman" is just a part of growing up, why look at it as something sinful or sacreligious...i dont get it.

I am surprised Lisa participated in the Rough Housing episode, which had a lot of lesbian overtones, as well as the suicide episode, considering she probably objects to those ideas too, or was it because by 1988, she was engaged to her minister man, whereas in 1979-1981, she was just a teenage girl?

Well, in the case of "Rough Housing," Lisa admitted on the FOL TVography that she did not pick up on those overtones till several weeks after the episode aired. She just thought Blair was teasing Cindy for being tomboyish when Blair wasn't...
I dont think she opposed the show about suicide since the episode was very helpful to young girls who were feeling suicidal and had nothing to do with pre-marital sex.

One of the questions I wanted to ask Lisa a few years ago was about Kim Fields, because Lisa said that she didn't know if Kim was a Christian and I remember hearing that Kim was one.

I still wonder what the show would have been like if Lisa were on The First Time episode. It seems like things premarital sex really burn Christians up more than any other moral issue, like 99% of everything else that was taught on The Facts of Life.

Mindy Cohn had a very good point when discussing Lisa's decision to not appear in "The First Time" :
"Sometimes ignoring something is worse than paying too much attention to it."
Lisa seemed to have temporarily forgotten that she was playing a character, not herself. Just becuase Lisa felt a certain way about a subject does not mean "Blair" would automatically share that point of view.

That goes the other way as well. They shouldn't assume that Lisa would be all gung ho about something b/c "Blair" would. Actors and Actresses should be able to object to anything that goes against their morals nor should they be forced to do anything they do not feel comfortable doing.

Good point, and Lisa was lucky the producers always respected her wishes and never tried to make her do something she was against. I just happen to disagree with this particular decision as I would have liked to see Blair in the episode.

very true, Lisa didn't have to necessarily agree with premarital sex to at least admit it is a "Fact of life", I remember reading something like 82% of high school seniors have had sex.

I'm wondering if Lisa's self-imposed absence from The First Time episode really changed anyone's opinions about the issue of premarital sex who watched it. People still got the safe-sex pitch regardless. If Lisa were on there with the "True Love Waits" message, that would have given it a sense of balance. Her not appearing on it changed nothing.
