Default Lisa Whelchel on GMA 8/23/04

I just got an email in which Lisa states the she has been asked to be a guest on “Good Morning America” this upcoming Monday, August 23rd. She will be discussing “Creative Correction” and, more specifically, her suggestion to apply a tiny drop of hot sauce on the tip of a child’s tongue to discipline for lying, profanity, and other mouth offenses.

Just wanted to pass on the info.

Thanks for the info, D! It's too bad I'll be away for the upcoming week, tho. And even if I weren't going away, I don't think I have any intention to wake up at... gulp... 7AM, LOL!

How you doing??? Hanging in there? You didn't give us an update on your thread in Chit Chat.

Well, first off Lisa has been rebooked for Tuesday 8/24/04.

As for me, yeah I'm hanging in there. It has been a long a trying week, and hopefully no more deaths will come for awhile. It was good to see some of the family I hadn't seen in awhile...but not under those circumstances.

This funeral has been the hardest for me because this lady was like a sister to my mom and like an Aunt to me. She was the nicest cousin...and will be missed.

But anyway, back to the Facts of Life.

The link you provided dosen't seem to be available anymore, however I did find a link to the full story that interviewed Lisa Whelchel over the hot sauce:

wouldn't a better way to discipline her daughters would be to call and make an appointment for them to get their hair permed just like Blair's in season 7, and then not cancel it until they realize the severity of misbehaving? lol

Exclamation And now, a note from Mr. McIlhenny

.[Many people use] the brand name "Tabasco" as a shorthand. Tabasco is the proprietary name of a single brand of sauce, made by the McIlhenny Co. of Avery Island, La. The owners of the company condemn the use of their products for child discipline. In an interview, company president Paul McIlhenny called the practice "strange and scary" and "abusive." Kendrick says parents who use the technique are "at the very least . . . ill-informed." He pointed out that many parents are not aware that hot sauce can burn a child's esophagus and cause the tongue to swell -- a potential choking hazard. The hot pepper technique's current popularity is due in part to Whelchel, a former Mickey Mouse Club Mouseketeer and actress who played the character Blair on the television series "The Facts of Life" in the 1980s.

Lisa mentioned (perhaps it was in her October e-letter that not everyone received) that now 20/20 is looking into doing/airing it early next year. My guess is that it was never filmed, as Lisa would have done a journal entry about the experience, as the whole family was invited to do the filming, right? It's sort of not a new subject anymore (is it?) so I wonder if they'll ever do it.

Default Tabasco @ Avery Island

I live not to far from where they make that Tabasco sauce at Avery Island, Louisiana. I do know that prolonged use of that sauce would make any kid change their mind. You can't spank your kids now days without someone saying you shouldn't, so what else is a parent supposed to do?
