do these people get their ranks once they join the war?

To be more specific, how did Dr. Frank Burns become Major Frank Burns? The same goes for everyone else. What made Dr. Henry Blake so special that he became the comanding officer?

If anyone knows, I'd appreciate an answer.

Another thing, was it normal for a Major (Frank) to bunk with two Captains (Hawkeye, Trapper)? I'm not asking sarcastically, I really want to know. Was it because of lack of tents? Then again, Trapper asked Hawkeye if he was going to move out of the Swamp once he left. Thus giving Hawkeye the option to stay or go.

Henry Blake went to Officer Training School. I assume that is why he acheived the rank of Lt. Colenel and was given command of the 4077. B.J. Hunnicutt took only basic training and entered the Army as a Captain. I would assume the same must have been true of Hawkeye and Trapper. I don"t know how Frank or Charles became Majors.

I believe Frank was in the Army Reserves, so he had more military trainingthan the other Doctors, which I guess transfered to a higher rank when he went to Korea.
