Default The Movie

When I asked how to get into the series, It was suggested that I watch the movie first.
After watching about 10 episodes I know now that I like the series.

But today, I finally get the oppurtunity to watch the movie on FX.
Its starts at noon.

I've never seen the movie on TV, but I'm sure it's probably edited somewhat.

Here's what I'm sure you didn't see/hear:

-Trapper's drunken diatribe at the chief surgeon party: "No. No booze. Sex. I want sex. That one. The sultry bitch with the fire in her eyes. Bring her to me. Take her clothes off and bring her to me."

-Hot Lips' partial nude scenes.

-Painless dropping the "f"-bomb at the football game.

-Trapper in Tokyo - this line was probably trimmed: "Look, mother, I want to go to work in one hour. We are the Pros from Dover and we figure to crack this kid's chest and get out to golf course before it gets dark. So you go find the gas-passer and you have him pre-medicate this patient. Then bring me the latest pictures on him. The ones we saw must be 48 hours old by now. Then call the kitchen and have them rustle us up some lunch. Ham and eggs will all right. Steak would be even better. And then give me at least ONE nurse who knows how to work in close without getting her tits in my way."

I only caught a glimpse of it.
I shouldve recorded it.
Damn.

Anywho, from what I saw I prefer the TV show.

Dont tempt me.
(I'd buy Season 1 over the movie, though)

Some day, some day.... I just have a lot to buy on the next couple weeks.
But it will be mine.... someday.

So do I. Maybe it's the actors that are better in the TV version. Any form of M*A*S*H without Alan Alda just seems odd to me.

I saw the TV series first, though. I own the movie on DVD and the director of the movie said he HATES the TV show of M*A*S*H. And how sad it is that when ever anyone hears the
word "M*A*S*H" they usually think of the TV show.

To Barwars,
You may know this or you may not, but in season 1 (whenever you get it) Klinger is only in six episodes, scattered throughout the year. Father Mulcahy is also in only six episodes and not all the same episodes as Klinger.

The movie has a completely different vibe and feel from the show. I saw the show first long before I had a chance to see the movie, so I tend to look at the movie version as some weird offshoot version. I know it was there first, but I guess seeing Alan Alda and co. doing it first colored my impression.

The movie has one hell of a cast - Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould, Robert Duvall, etc, but I can't get into it the way I can enjoy watching the same episodes of the show over and over again.

BTW, I just picked up a copy of the original novel. I read it years ago, but forgot about it, so I decided to buy it and re-read it, which I will do soon. I know there were several book sequels - anybody read them and have opinions on them??

Ditto.
By the way, I own the original and three sequels. I still need to read the sequels. I'll probably be finished on Tuesday, and I'll give you an opinion.

I just read one of the sequels, years ago-"MASH GOES TO VIENNA"-and my opinon is "DON'T read it, it's AWFUL It has nothing whatsoever to do with MASH, and it's not even set during the Korean war, or even in Korea. It has an entirely different set of characters, and it's set during the 70s, when it was written. Oh yes, it does have Hawkeye and Trapper, but they're only on one page about a quarter of the way in, then don't show up again until close to the end, but only have a small role. The first time they appear, though, Hawkeye makes a reference to something that happaned at the 4077th MASH unit in Korea, but that's it.

I heard that this and the other sequels were written by Richard Thornberger, who wrote the first one, as a sort of, I guess you could say "attack" on the show, which he hated.

M*A*S*H Goes to Maine is great; it should have Duke and the others in it more, though-Hawkeye and the "Maineiacs"(I like that ) are in it the most. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the first, or even anyone who never read it.

What's interesting is that in the book Hawkeye and Duke Forrest are the cental characters and Trapper is more of a supporting character.
