Alias "Slowhand."
Eric Clapton got that nickname during his days as a Yardbirds member: Yardbirds manager Giorgio Gomelsky gave him that in humorous reference to Clapton's blistering speed on lead guitar. It also came about when Eric, while bending notes onstage, broke a string. As he replaced the string, the audience engaged in a slow handclapping: Slow-Hand-Clap-Ton.
P.S.: I read about this on page 39 of Michael Schumacher's "Crossroads", a 1995 Clapton biography.
