Um...I love the DVD. The ONLY bad thing is they take like a few minutes out. I don't know how many, but for example:
Pilot: I know there was a first line where Willy says he is calling his friend Borshka from Yugoslavia with Brian. Baby, you can Drive my car: That man comes in to help Kate bring in the groceries for like a minute or 2 or 3 after the car breaks down. SEVERAL ENDING SCENES IN THE CLOSING CREDITS ARENT FEATURED: I am not sure, but in the Christmas one, Mr. Ockmonich is drinking eggnog, and the one where Alf goes insane where Trevor sees the cage Willy built for him...I think these were edited out. Besides that, I like it. Hey, it's commerical free, good episodes. Funny...I give it an 8. But it loses 2 points for the editing out of scenes. I WILL STILL BUY ALL SEASONS THOUGH |

Riff, I would respectfully disagree with you that PB just glossed over the fact that the episodes were short. He didn't have any original episodes to compare the length to. His review was probably one of the first online, well before Lions Gate released any sort of official explanation which they later pulled to make it more clearer. You shouldn't judge Lions Gate until you hear officially what happened, there is only speculation at this point.

Some of the blame definitely falls in the lap of Lions Gate, but I think Warner should get some of the heat, too. After all, they're the owner of the show and (presumably) the ones who provided the tapes to Lions Gates.

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to see the explanation of this travesty before it was pulled. Does anyone remember the jist of the message?

Thanks for the link information. The following appears to be the response they withdrew.
Lions Gate is committed to releasing the highest quality DVDs possible and worked closely with the ALF creators and producers to create the DVD set. The set was produced with the syndicated television episodes because the elements allowed for the best visual and audio quality on DVD. Thank you for your interest in the ALF Season One DVD. The fact they pulled this post seems to indicate it's not a reasonable excuse. It's heartening to see quite a few people involved in reversing this butchering of the series. Like a few people have said, if they want cut versions on DVD, they may as well just record them themselves from the TV or from tapes they've already recorded. Why pay for cut episodes. At least advertise the fact episodes are cut on the packaging and see how sales fare then. |

Yeah, I heard that they were edited. That part is in the opening in the unaired pilot, but it is not seen in any of the actual epsidoes. Still I haven't seen ALF on TV in years, so even edited eps are better than nothing.

I noticed the cuts by the end credits stills. I picked up the same problem with MASH episodes shown here. But fortunately the DVD's appear uncut.

Just compared the two running times and it doesn't look promising. Amazon Germany has it 2 minutes shorter!!

Yes, but no extras at all included... remember the R1 set had a 23 minute alternate pilot and a blooper reel.
614 minutes divided by 26 episodes is 23½ minutes per episode. For the R1 release, well you'd have to subtract the blooper reel and unedited pilot runtime, say 23+7 minutes, which comes to 586 minutes of episodes. Then remove say.. 46 minutes cause of the one double episode that is unedited (to calculate the edited eps only) to get 540 minutes, divided by the remaining 24 episodes that comes to 22½ minutes per episode, meaning that I either missed to list some extras or LionsGate lied about the runtime. |
