Default How promiscuous do you think the characters actually were?

I'm wondering how much you think the characters actually had sex, because while there was innuendo they rarely mentioned it while talking straight about it.

We are able to assume that Larry was willing to go after any cheap girl that came his way, so Larry was pretty much known to have no standards.

Jack is a slightly different story, there is the episode where he thinks his girlfriendis pregnant, the episode where he thinks he took advantage of Janet, as well as episodes where he makes jokes about girls who "cant say no". There is also the epsiode where the girl wants Jack to father her child, and he normally would have had sex with her, it was the idea of actualyl trying to impregnate her (instead of using protection or her being on the pill) is what got to him.

I'm not really sure about Janet, I dont know if anyone has instances to shed light on that.

Chrissy is a tough one, because Janet was worried about her being left alone with Jack, and Janet obviously didnt think Jack would rape her or anything, she was worried that he would legitimately seduce her. However, Chrissy, being a pastors daughter, probably wouldnt be very promiscuous.

The episode where Chrissy and Janet both think the other is having an affair with Jack, pretty much shows the fact that they both beleived the other to be sexually active

Cindy isnt in the episode enough for you to really get a feeling for her, however, there is the episode where they think she is pregnant, which shows that Jack and Janet both believed she was sexually active.

I think that Terri may have been more sexually active than any of the other girls, she was an empowered type of career woman, and I know that empowered women often shrug off the conception that it is ok for a man to be promiscuous but not a woman. Except for the episode where Jack has the moustache, Terri isnt shown as the type of girl that could be seduced, meaning that she would be more likely to go out of her way to find guys she was interested in, if that makes sense.

As for RF....I dont think he was nearly as active as he would like everyone else to believe

I had another thought, I think about Terri, but I lost it.

What we do have to remember, is that Three's Company was meant to be everything embodying a sexually liberated generation and passing on old values

Though, as we learned from Days of Beer and Weeds none of them smoked marijuana (well, Larry hinted that he might have), or could even identify a plant (well besides Janet). The funny thing about that is, on the Pilot on the season 2 DVD, "David" mentions someone lighting something in a map of Mexico, and he forgot what had happened after that.

I think it may be possible that part of the idea was to show that Jack, Janet, and Chrissy weren't degenerates of any sort, which is why this show pretty much made men and women living together plutonically acceptable.

Janet - No.

They never showed her kissing or even cuddling with a man. I think men made her nervous.

sorry I normally dont correct people, for whatever reason the urge was not resistable

and Janet did seem especially nervous around men, like she was kind of jumpy, I dont think there was really any time during the show where she had a decent type of relationship with a man

Post Janet is just a player hater.

I believe Janet did have boyfriends and showed interest in men. She even got married to Philip Dawson, who I believe is a man. So I guess she just didn’t like dogs and players.

Well I gave the promiscuous question some thought and this is what I believe:

Larry: Yes.
I believe Larry was a true player.

Jack: No.
I believe that Jack was a wannabe player who sometimes in his quest for player-hood crossed the line into dog-dom. But I feel that Jack really deep down was a good decent man who was just trying to fit in with the times of the sexual revolution. If Jack was a true player and/or dog, he would’ve definitely have slept with at least one of his roommates. Jack toyed with his roommates but he knew that he could rely on the women to put him on a leash if he overstepped his boundaries. I imagine if for whatever reasons one of his roommates didn’t stop him from going all the way, Jack would’ve stopped himself since at the core he really was a morally upstanding person.

Mr. Furley: No.
I think Ralph Furley was another wannabe player.

Lana: Possibly.
I don’t remember too much of Lana but she seemed kind of wanton to me. Jack was probably just another conquest to Lana. Also I think Lana was after Jack just to prove to herself that she still ‘got-it’ for a mature woman; it was an ego thing.

Mr. and Mrs. Roper: No.
They were married and even though Mrs. Roper was feeling neglected; she never really sought solace in another man’s arms.

Janet: No.
Janet was a player hater period; so I seriously doubt she would be promiscuous herself. I don’t believe Janet was a man-hater anymore than Jack was a dog. I think Janet was just a liberated outspoken woman for her times who was just sick and tired of being preyed upon by lecherous fiends. I think Janet (like Jack) was a decent person who got swept up in the times. Janet played the role of a feminist but I really believe that she was just as traditionalist as Jack when push came to shove. Besides, if Janet really hated men and was truly fearful of Jack’s so-called lecherous ways, I believe she either would’ve never let Jack stay in the apartment or she would’ve left the apt herself.

Chrissy: No.
Chrissy was dizzy and liberated but she was no whore. I believe she did internalize the important aspects of her dad’s religious/moralistic ways.

Cindy: No.
I don’t know much about Cindy but she was basically Chrissy with a clumsy streak. Since Chrissy was decent, I believe Cindy coming from the same family had a similar sense of decency too.

Terri: No.
Terri seemed just as prudish as Janet. For me personally, I saw Terri as being Janet lite; with Terri having the same strong liberated mind-set but a little more relaxed in the ‘player-hating’ department.

First off, Jack met Lana because he was filling in for Larry as a male escort, and she was constantly trying to have sex with Jack, these things prove that whether she was actually promiscuous or not, she was definately sexually interested.

I also think that how many people you have to sleep with to be promiscuous is something we should look at, because Jack definately was sexually active, it is easy to tell that from the fact that Jack was always talking about girls that "Couldnt say no" etc that he was active with the girls he was dating, especially considering the time he thought that girl was pregnant, and he most certainly wasnt stupid enough to propose to her if he hadnt slept with her. (I mean that in the sense that he would know it wasnt his responsibility)

Just becuase he didnt have sex with Janet or Chrissy the whole time doesnt mean he wasnt active with other girls, in the earlier episodes he was most certainly trying, but later on her understood the importance of normalcy between the roommates.

Also, in Strange Bedfellows when Roper was in Jack's bed Jack wasnt surprised until he realized it was Roper (I mean that in the sense that it wasnt surprisng to him to wake up with someone in his bed)

There was also the episode where Jack said"I just want to find a nice girl who likes to say yes" and Chrissy said "Why?" then Jack said "you know how these parties can get" and he put his lips in a circle and started breathing in and out really hard.

I think that whether any of the characters besides Larry were truly "promiscuous" is definately debatable, but I think that Jack, Cindy, and Terri were definately at least a little bit sexually active, and Janet most likely was also.

The reason I believe that Cindy was most certainly active is once again, the episode where they thought she was pregnant, that shows for sure that at least Janet and Jack believed she was active, and they know her much better than we do.

Terri was a new type of educated, empowered woman, if she was promiscuous it wouldnt be because she was a slut of low self esteem, instead it would be because she had truly embraced the revolution and wanted to tear down the thought that it was ok for a man to have sex with different people but not for a woman. True sexual equality is a thing that can never be achieved until women are having sex not because they have a low self esteem and it is the only way they can get any gratification but because they understand that they are a sexual being with needs and urges, and they dont feel guilty about fulfilling them.

Janet doesnt give us much insight, but i believe she HAS had sex before, but probably very infrequently.

As far as Chrissy, I most certainly couldnt say, I definately wouldnt rule it out, after all, this TV show was a genuinely important piece of popular culture for the generation of sexual freedom. There is only one piece I can provide about Chrissy that are very insightful at all, and that is that in the Pilot Janet mentioned something about how easily seduced Chrissy was and how she didnt have a very strong will towards men.

Jack was no Sam Malone, but I think he definately has sex with women after he has gone on a few dates with them. Especially since most of the women he dates arent especially attractive or intelligent, so that leaves you to imagine what he must be in it for.

Though, it seems that most people here are not very progressive at all, believing such things should be kept till marriage (a tired institution)

Social Nihilism shall prevail
