Default The Jerk on DVD=BAD! (Need Special Edition Release)

Guys,

One of my favorite movies ever is The Jerk. I don't have the DVD but, was advised NOT to get it for several reasons:

1.) It's a Pan and Scan (Full Screen Version)

2.) Extras are minimal (Theatrical Trailer and Scene Selection but that's it)

3.) No restoration was done on the film at all for the DVD. (The picture looks like a VCR tape)

4.) Several scenes are "missing" that are in all syndicated prints, including:

1.) Navin riding the "funny cars" at the amusment park and saying, "Did you ever see a man so broke he had to spin?"

2.) Navin telling his mother that he has been waiting for his skin to change color "any year now."

3.) Navin elaborating with Mr. Hartoonian at the gas station about making $1.10 an hour. The tape/DVD/premium cable scene has Navin at the urinal, talking to Mr. Hartoonian. The syndicated version scene, (which I like better) has Mr. Hartoonian talking to Navin from outside the restroom door, and the added dialoge about making $1.10 an hour. Tape versions and even premium cable chanels go right to the scene with Navin washing the car and the upbeat music.

4.) The scene with the Texas Millionare complaining about the rips on the seats of his airplane has been cut from DVD/VCR/premium cable releases.

This classic needs a Special Edition restoration in the worst way! All of the missing footage should be restored, there should be interviews with the cast and crew, "The Jerk" outtakes, trivia. I would even like a Special edition two disk set!!!

I hope that Universal will release a Special Edition of this classic comedy film. I was thinking, that since the movie was released in 1979, that a 25th Anniversery Special Edition release of The Jerk should come out this year! (We can hope!)

Has anyone heard anything about this?

Jack

Guys,

I heard that a 26th anniversery Special Edition DVD WILL be released later this month in Widescreen format. Some questions though:

1.) Will this version also include the extended TV scenes that have been cut from the VHS/earlier DVD release?

2.) Any news on any special features with this edition other than a widescreen format?

I don't agree.

Name a good comedy so I can evaluate your opinion.
Or at least state why it is bad.

Why don't you just call out Buster Keaton and Fatty Arbuckle?
Different era, different style and type of comedy.

I know! But I can name a bunch of old great flicks from The Bank Dick and Duck Soup, all the way up to Arthur (without a doubt, classic).

There are some funny, silly moments in The Jerk, it's not a great flick, but there is a charm that some people find themselves attracted.
I wouldn't condemn it.

I liked parts of The Man With Two Brains - "into the mud, scum queen!!" is classic". But I think that All of Me is a better movie.

And as a classic movie lover that you seem to be, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid is a ton of fun and very funny.
