Default Beach Boys Musical Coming to Broadway

http://apnews.excite.com/article/200...D84BT0001.html

Beach Boys Musical Coming to Broadway

NEW YORK (AP) - Surf's up! "Good Vibrations," a new musical using more than 30 Beach Boys songs, will open on Broadway in January.

The show, which does not tell the story of the famous '60s singing group, will begin preview performances in early December at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre. An opening date will be announced shortly.

"Good Vibrations" has a book by Richard Dresser and concerns a group of small-town teenagers who come to Southern California. It will be directed and choreographed by John Carrafa, who created the dance sequences for "Urinetown" and the Vanessa Williams revival of "Into the Woods."

Among the songs expected to be used in the show are such Beach Boys classics as "Good Vibrations,""Fun, Fun, Fun,""California Girls,""Help Me, Rhonda,""Surf City,""Surfer Girl" and "Surfin' Safari."

The show had a recent workshop production at New York Stage & Film, a summer festival located on the campus of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

They made a musical based on Billy Joel's music (Movin' Out), and it's really bad. I have a feeling this won't be very good, either.

But I may be wrong.

Oh man is this going to suck.

Though "Into The Woods" was a great musical.

Yeah, I agree. When someone takes existing pop songs and inserts them into a musical, it usually yields lame results.

I can see it now:

TOMMY: Hey, Johnny. Why so glum?

JOHNNY: Ah, those darn east side kids made fun of our school again.

TOMMY: Oh, Johnny. When that happens, I don't let it get to me.

JOHNNY: You don't?

TOMMY: No. For you see...

[Singing]

When some loud braggart tries to put me down
And says his school is great...

Yikes.

That is probably better than the actual crap they are going to spew out.

Yeah, I hope it's not too crappy. But, I think that most musicals are. I like the Beach Boys music, but somehow I don't expect this to be too good.

TOMMY: I'm glad we're in California, Johnny. We have the best girls!

JOHNNY: The best?

TOMMY: The best. For you see...

Well, East Coast girls are hip
I really dig those styles they wear...

while one might not expect high art out of musicals based on the songwritings of 60's and 70's pop stars... look at the bright side... it sells records.

Statistics have shown that in towns where "Mamma Mia" played, the week afterwards, sales of ABBA's catalog multiplies as much as 600%. I bet the same thing happens with Billy Joel's albums where "Movin' Out" plays.

Good Vibrations will likely do the same thing with the Beach Boys' catalog
