Thumbs up Very Best of TMTMS

I got out The Very Best of TMTMS from my public library and copied seasons 2-7 (Who knows when they will come out on DVD, so this was my best bet!) on to a blank tape. This was my first exposure to season 2-7 and I could definitly see the growth from season 1.

Anywho... when I was watching "My Brother's Keeper" (Season 3) I was really shocked at the ending about Ben being gay! I was surprised to see that show dealt with issues like that, and quite well, I might add! (IMO, alot better than Norman Lear did with All in the Family.) Well, thats my 2 cents on that episode.

I know this is gonna sound dumb, but when I finally watched "The Last Show" I cried!!!!!!!!!! It was so sad!! lol

Kurt,
Yes, "My Brother's Keeper" is one of the best episodes. That ending is classic! Cloris did a wonderful job in that episode. I think I remember reading somewhere that the original ending didn't work in rehearsals, so they came up with the "surprise."

Crying at the last episode is NOT dumb at all! I've seen the episode too many times to cry anymore, but I definitely feel a lump in my throat when I see them all leave the newsroom.

Yeah, according to Vince Waldron's Classic Sitcoms James Brooks admits that wasn't the original idea, it was added as a last minute re-write. Cloris was hilarious in this episode, and "Lars Affair" too! IMO, Phyllis is her funniest when she's angry!

I'm glad you don't think it's dumb! Honestly, I didn't think I would cry since I haven't seen too many episodes, but I did! (All I've seen is Season 1 and The Very Best of TMTMS, I wish I could see more!) That's a testament to the writing and acting of this show; if I could only see 30 or so episodes and still manage to cry at the series finale, it must be good! (Hint, hint, TV Land: Put it back on TV!!!)

If you're willing, maybe we could work out some kind of tape trade to get you some more episodes. Feel free to contact me on AOL. My sn is MaryRichardsFan.

Phyllis is funny anytime, especially when Rhoda is involved! But you can't forget "The Lars Affair." Cloris got an Emmy for that episode, well-deserved, IMO!

Post Very Best Of MTMS

Hi,
Yes its a great VHS set,"My Brother's Keeper" is a very good episode,my favourite one is "Put On A Happy Face".
Such a pity Phyllis'gay brother never appeared in "Phyllis"!
"The Last Show" is great, love the fact Rhoda and Phyllis come back to help Mary and the show ends on a high, pity"Rhoda" didn't end on a similar high note.

Question Tipperary?

As I said earlier in this thread I loved the finale, but I'm a little bit confused about why they sung the song "It's a Long Way to Tipperary." I did some research on the song and it was written during World War II, and that it's pretty famous for the era. Anyone know why it was used in the MTM finale?

I also liked the fact that they dealt with the gay issue in such a classy way. They didn't make a big thing out of it at all...it was just a funny surprise at the end...brilliant work!!

I hope you get a chance to see more of the later episodes Kurt. Those are definitely the best IMO. Mary's Insomnia and Mary's three husbands are two of my favs from the last season. Good luck.
