Watched most of Season 1 today on a long car trip, and noticed something cool. When Kelly said she'd go to Hawaii with Slater while he was 'ill', she said she'd stay with her uncle there. Awesome how later on the detail was possible expanded to be the premise for the first film.

Actually, it's her grandfather who lives in Hawaii in the movie. But like you said, they still played on it. Which is very unlike the writers. LOL
