Man goes on kindergarten rampage

BEIJING, China (AP) -- A gatekeeper at a kindergarten in Beijing slashed 16 of the school's children and three teachers with a kitchen knife Wednesday, killing one student and leaving the rest of them terrorized and "covered in blood," news reports said.

The child died in hospital and two others suffered "serious injuries" in the attack at a kindergarten affiliated with Peking University in the Chinese capital, according to the Web site Sina.com.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the suspected attacker was in police custody and identified him as Xu Heping, a 51-year-old gatekeeper at the school. It said the attacker used a vegetable knife in the slashings.

Police received reports around 9:30 a.m. (0130 GMT) that a man had been "hacking people up at the kindergarten," Sina.com said.

Eight officers were sent to the scene within a minute and arrested the man, it said.

Citing a reporter at the hospital, the Xinhua report said the children were "covered in blood and looked terrified."

"Thirteen of the children had light injuries but their heads were bound with bloody bandages," Xinhua said.

The kindergarten is run by the hospital of Peking University, one of China's most prominent universities, the reports said.

The street in front of the school was cordoned off with yellow police tape and a small crowd of onlookers were gathered behind it.

A woman who answered the phone at the university president's office said she did not have any details and wouldn't give her name.

Telephones at the police station in the Xicheng District of the Chinese capital, where the kindergarten is located, were not answered.

I dunno why people even like to share these little stories that they heard. It just brings me down. That is just my opinion.

I have to admit one reason I like my town, is it so crimefree. The worst that happens is someone shoplifts at the local supermarket. Usually an elderly woman who down and out.
