They played "Uhny Uftz" the other
day and there's something in there that I've never understood and never will without someone's help. Does the sound the flying saucer makes, "uhny uftz," sound like the name Sonny Tufts or the sound of his voice? I knew he was some obscure movie actor but I wouldn't know him if I ever saw him. But Sally says something to Rob about them coming down here and the first person they're gaonna ask for is Sonny Tufts? But later Laura says a flying saucer with Sonny Tufts "voice." Which is it? And I love this episode but the ending always bothers me in that it breaks Carl Reiner's rule of being true to life more than any other. Did they suddenly invent an anti-gravity device in 1965 that allows this "toy" to fly with no wires or no propellers? That was straight out of Gilligan's Island stuff. But I wouldn't have wanted to toss out a otherwise great script either. |

I think Sonny Tufts will be most well-known to viewers today as the "other man" in "The Seven Year Itch," starring Marilyn Monroe. He's the guy the husband keeps picturing seducing his wife while she's away.
If you haven't seen the movie check it out! It's a great summer flick (and it has the scene where Marilyn's dress blows up over her head on the subway grating.) |

BUT -- then again --- how DID the Van Dyke Show crew make the "saucer" "fly"? Because we SEE it fly around the "toy laboratory" at the end of the "Uftz" episode. Do you see any wires or supporting device? I guess there must be some wires; but they did a nice job of hiding them, because I see none. |

There are wires, but they are very discrete about it.
