It's too bad this set has heavily edited episodes and missing opening credits!

Hello all:
I floated over here from the Dick Van Dyke Show board. I loved the Danny Thomas Show and I don't it gets the respect it deserves, at least from current critics. Virtually every family centered sitcom since is doing a variation of it. Also, Danny Williams was probably the first television father to react to his kids acting up as real fathers did -- by exploding! The other TV dads of the period "reasoned" with their kids. Danny's character was far more realistic. So, I was quite happy to see the DVD collection, which I bought as soon as I found it. I was also disappointed. The episodes are edited, which to me is unforgiveable for a DVD collection. It's true they're not as hacked up as what Nick at Night used to do to them, but they nevertheless are missing about a minute and half each. What I also find annoying is the lack of the intro to each episode. When you pop in the disc, you get a basic show open, followed by a montage of clips -- and then the episodes run back to back, with no open, but with the closing credits. But the opening on each disc is the syndicated "Make Room for Daddy" opening credits, and not the original "The Danny Thomas Show" creidts. As everybody on this board knows, it was called MRFD when it ran on ABC with Jean Hagen as Margaret, but when it moved to CBS in 1957, the title changed to the Danny Thomas Show. And the open was NOT the one you used to see on Nick At Night. It featured a drawing of Danny in front of a mike, and the words "the Danny Thomas Show" slid onto the screen from the sides. The last time I know of that intro airing on TV was about 15 years ago when the Channel America Network (which had low power UHF stations as affiliates) aired the show. It would have been nice for the DVD set to include that original opening top each episode. Hopefully the other seasons will be issued with that correction made. And I supposed I'm biased, but I think these shows still hold up and are still funny today -- only the clothing and furniture styles are dated. The Danny Thomas Show was a great show that deseved more respect than it got from this collection -- though this set is still worth buying. Thanks for allowing me to rant! |

Hello Everyone!
I'm new to this site but I must agree with LATTML! I too was very disappointed by the DVD set of Season 5. I expected to obtain the whole episode of this fine show that my family and I watched during our growing years. Also, I thought that Questar would include the original introduction from 1957-1958 with the sliding doors. I saw this introduction recently at the Library of Congress. I felt good seeing it again along with the original commercials. The episode I watched was entitled "The Dinah Shore Show" in which Dinah Shore was the Guest Star that Terry (Sherry Jackson) and her friend got for the school dance. I saw this episode in it's entirety. something I hadn't seen since the sixties. I think that more people should write or e-mail the distributing company SFM because Danny Thomas' son Tony Thomas is with this company and we should let them know our displeasure regarding this issue. Thanks! for your cooperation. |

Another complaint -- why didn't they include an episode guide or at least put the names of the episodes on each disc? I ended up making my own list of what shows are on each disc.

This is a great show which was given an abominable DVD release. Apparently SFM had no faith in the sales potential of the show so they wouldn't spring for the cost of going back to the original source elements and they just used the transfers that were done for TV Land. Unfortunately those are cut by at least 4 minutes.

Wow, what a bummer.
I got kinda excited when I saw the threads that this show was on DVD. I really liked this one too, but the collection doesn't sound too good from what I've heard now. Oh well, maybe I should at least get the first season, since it's been so long. Would like to see some of the shows again... |
