Wow. Just wow. I just got done watching the first episode of this new series and am awe-struck by its greatness. FX has another winner on its hands.
For those of you who haven't heard of the show (it just premiered Wednesday, July 21), it stars Denis Leary as FDNY firefighter Tommy Gavin. Tommy has a lot of baggage. He's dealing with his recent separation from his wife, the losses he suffered on 9/11 and memories of people he couldn't save. I urge you to watch this show. I can't say enough good things about it. It's the best new show since The Shield. The pilot repeats tomorrow night at 10:30 on FX. New episodes premiere Wednesday nights at 10. Here is a link to the show's official website. |

Yeah, it's a great show.
Very funny one minute and dead serious the next, a perfect mix. Leary and co-creator Peter Tolan are a great team. I look forward to seeing how the first season plays out. |

I'm on board with this show. Wait, do I get FX? How do I find out? I love Leary. This guy needs a hit. He has what it takes, and he's a Boston native. I wonder what his politics are, LOL...scratch that. I thought I was on another message board.
I know Leary has a fierce devotion to Firefighters. His cousin was among eight firefighters who persished in a warehouse fire in Worcester Mass about five years ago. I enjoyed his short lived show a year or so ago....sort of a dramedy set in a police station. What was it? Wow, I'm full of questions tonight.

Leary also started a charity for firefighters a few years ago, but the name of it escapes me. Quote:

Thanks AKA. I do get FX. I'll be sure to watch it tomorrow night at 10:30, and the second and subsequent episodes Wednesday at 10:00.
At the no politic's sign. I tend to act up on boards I don't moderate. Sort of like the school teacher getting drunk after school closes, lol.I never missed a single episode of The Job. I didn't like that his character was cheating on his wife though. It was an edgy show. I wonder why it didn't make it. I loved it. I've seen Leary in a few movies too. He's talented and versatile. |

The job probably would have thrived on cable. FX certainly isn't afraid of showing unique and edgy shows.

This is an incredible show. It has a lot of heart and humor, not always an easy balance to strike.
I don't watch FX, so I was surprised at the content and profanity. I thought only subscribed channels could do that. It makes me wonder what other gems I may be missing on this channel. Politically correct this show is not, but that suits me fine. I was also surprised that they can get away with the gay slurs and remarks. I'm thinking that there's a redeeming episode in the near future. Interesting and sad how 9/11 is used as a backdrop. Leary delivers. I'd like to see Rescue Me make it. It reminds me of The Job with a different setting. Leary's character is similar. I don't think he ever acts anyway. He just plays himself. Thanks for the recommendation AKA. I only wish I saw the first episode. If anyone hears it's being re-aired, please let me know.

Glad you like it, Janice. I think you'll also like The Shield, which is also on FX (but is in hiatus until early 2005, which gives you pleny of time to get caught up
).

I'm still loving this show. Leary's character Tommy is priceless. I hope this show sticks around for a while. I wonder how it's doing in the ratings. I know the critics love it.

FX Fired Up Over Leary's 'Rescue Me'
By Andrew Wallenstein Hollywood Reporter NEW YORK - FX has renewed Denis Leary's firefighter drama "Rescue Me" for a second season. Just five episodes into the series' first season, the cable channel has ordered at least 13 more installments; the exact order hasn't been determined but it is not expected to be any more than 15. Leary plays a New York fireman haunted by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. He also writes and executive produces the series with Peter Tolan and Jim Serpico. "Rescue Me" has averaged 2 million viewers in the key adults 18-49 demo in its Wednesday 10 p.m. slot, the highest total in that coveted demographic for a new basic cable show. The series averages a cumulative audience of 9.5 million over the course of its five airings per week. But strong ratings wasn't the only thing that factored into "Rescue's" renewal, according to John Landgraf, president of entertainment at FX. "The issue is, how strong is the series creatively and is it growing," he said. "I feel and everyone else here feels (that) the show has only gotten better since the pilot episode." The second season of "Rescue," from producers Sony Pictures Television and DreamWorks TV, is expected to begin in mid-2005; the series is still in production on its first season. |
