Sweeney Todd

[Georgia's on my Mind]

Has anyone else heard about this a movie version of this musical being released in 2005? I'm going to go crazy myself if this rumor is true. First Phantom, now Todd.

I heard about a year ago that it was in the planning stages and that Spielberg was to direct. I've since heard that Sam Mendes is going to do it, but there have been no other details as far as I know. As much as I love that show, there's a part of me that's hoping it won't be made into a film. Without Angela Lansbury, it just wouldn't be as good (and I don't even want to think about what Spielberg would have done to it). It was perfect as it was on the stage.

I was thrilled when the filmed-for-TV 1982 production (with Lansbury and Hearn) finally came out on DVD earlier this year, but I just don't know if I could watch a movie adaptation.

I didn't know what "Sweeney Todd" was until I saw the movie "Jersey Girl" with Ben Affleck. In it, his daughter wanted to see a broadway play and she decided "Sweeney Todd" (because "Cats" wasn't playing). Not knowing the plot, Ben takes her to see it and we see the scene where the guy gets his head chopped off. It seriously gave me nightmares LOL. There was more though. There was a parent's night at her school and each student had to pick a song from a Broadway play for her family to act out and Affleck's daughter chose "God, that's Good" from "Sweeney Todd" (everyone else chose "Memories" from "Cats") and they acted it out with George Carlin (who played Affleck's father) getting his head chopped off by Affleck (as Sweeney Todd) and then the teacher fained. It was kind of funny but it gave me nightmares.
