Q&A: Brian Wilson

The Guardian

Brian Wilson was born in 1942 in Los Angeles. He is deaf in one ear. He wrote his first song at five and, after school, formed the Pendletones. In 1961 the group recorded Wilson's "Surfin'." Renamed the Beach Boys, in 1966 they released the now legendary album Pet Sounds. Today, Wilson begins his fourth residency at the Royal Festival Hall.

What is your greatest fear?
Dying.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
My laziness - I'm a lazy slob and don't like to work.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Rudeness.

What has been your most embarrassing moment?
When I karate chopped Elvis Presley. He called me 'Duke' - I was so nervous I acted stupid. It was in 1975 at RCA Victor Studios. After I did that, he said, 'I gotta get outta here.'

What vehicles do you own?
Mercedes 500 SL, Hummer, Porsche Turbo.

What is your favourite book?
The Bible.

What is your favourite word?
'Love'.

What is your greatest extravagance?
Eating.

What is your most unappealing habit?
Over-eating and eating too fast.

How often do you have sex?
Twice a day, every day.

For what cause would you die?
To save my kids from drowning in the pool.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?
My wife Melinda.

Which living person do you most despise?
I can't answer that - I wouldn't want to hurt their feelings.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
'Right the f--k on.'

What is your greatest regret?
Waiting so long to finish Smile [the long-awaited, and as-yet unreleased, follow-up to Pet Sounds].

When were you happiest?
In the studio making Pet Sounds.

What single thing would improve the quality of your life?
If I ate more vegetables.

What would your motto be?
Keep living.

Do you believe in life after death?
I don't.

How would you like to be remembered?
As a good songwriter.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
To be creative all the time.
