What a great episode!!! Ron Howard did an awesome acting job, especially his crying scene. It was so out of character for happy go lucky Opie to shed tears, that it makes the scene all the more memorable.

That is one episode I have never seen. When I see clips of it I start to cry. Anything with death I get the weepys.

a little trivia:
when they were doing that show, Ron Howard was getting ready to film one scene (I think it was when Opie first realizes that the bird's dead) and he looked up at the director and said "Excuse me? But I don't think a kid would really react that way." So the director knelt down in front of him and said "Allright, then how would a kid react?" So Ron told him, and they did the scene that way. Then after it was over, he turned to Andy and said "You know, that was the first time an adult ever listened to me." |

On the A&E biography of Andy Griffith, Ron Howard relates this story (although he doesn't name the episode or idea, but it sounds like the description here). He goes on to give Andy's quote as: "well, that's the first idea of yours that was any damn good!" which I think is just as humorous, if a bit more blunt!
