Default "Cosby Show" DVD release closer to a reality?

Carsey-Werner has licensed That '70s Show to Fox for DVD release. What does this mean for other Carsey-Werner shows, such as The Cosby Show? No one's quite sure yet, but That '70s Show's DVD release is an encouraging sign that a DVD release will happen.

What you mean is that you want the Raven years and that is it.

And get back to us when you buy season 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and then some more.

I don't have a problem with you. You have a problem.

I don't know why your so interested in who I'm a fan of. Does it make a difference to you if I watch a show because I like it or because Raven is in it? You're a complete stranger so I have no interest in talking to you or fighting with you.

I'd be all over seasons 1-6. Not sure if I'd touch the Cousin Pam years, though.

Wow, I was right! For once.

This appeared today on TVShowsonDVD.com:

Fans of The Cosby Show have been wanting DVDs of this 80's Thursday night staple since TV-on-DVD got to be popular. Unfortunately, the only offerings made available so far were a few expensive best-of discs purchasable only by subscription to Columbia House..."not sold in stores". Rights-holder Carsey-Werner-Mandabach hadn't made ANY of their vast library of television properties available in stores in the USA so far.

Now, things are looking up for the Cos'. As we mentioned yesterday, Fox Home Entertainment has licensed two other CWM titles for DVD distribution: That '70s Show (scheduled to hit late October/early November), and short-run animated series God, The Devil, and Bob (planned for early 2005).

Variety has this report on the subject

Quote:
Carsey-Werner-Mandabach finally is making a splash in the DVD market, pacting with Fox Home Entertainment to begin releasing its series on DVD -- starting with hit laffer "That '70s Show."

Pact calls for Fox to distribute only "That '70s Show" and CWM's short-lived animated "God, the Devil and Bob." If those releases go well, however, CWM has told Fox the studio is first in line to release two other big titles in CWM's library: "The Cosby Show" and "Roseanne."

CWM co-prexy/chief operating officer Dirk van de Bunt said the company talked to several studios about releasing CWM titles on DVD. Fox "gave a very effective marketing proposal, and we thought they were the way to go," he said.

...CWM's only experience in DVD sales has been through an international release of "3rd Rock From the Sun" and a deal with Columbia House, which packaged a series of three-episode "best-of" DVDs for "The Cosby Show."
That's good news for The Cosby Show fans, because the success of That '70s Show on DVD seems to be a sure bet. The more that one sells, the more chance there is for The Cosby Show to make it out. Stay tuned, and we'll let you know more as the situation develops! For now, don't forget that Bill Cosby...Himself (the inspiration for The Cosby Show) hit stores the other day, courtesy of Fox, and can be had for around $10. Be sure to get it immediately...it's a laugh-riot

I think it's wrong for them to rely on the sales of another show to release this show. That is so unfair to the fans of this show and others.

I don't think it's wrong. Carsey-Werner is testing the waters. Save for the Columbia House Cosby Show "best-ofs" and a region 2 3rd Rock set, they've never released any of their shows on DVD before. They want to see how well a mass-market season set of one of their shows will sell before releasing more.

So That '70s Show is more a guinea pig than anything.

Shout! Facotry did something similar - they released the critically acclaimed, but low-rated, series Freaks And Geeks on DVD earlier this year, and waited to see how it sold before they signed on to release the same team's other short-lived series, Undeclared.

I think That '70s Show will sell quite well, though, and we'll have copies of The Cosby Show and Roseanne on our shelves within a year.

The Cosby Show would definately be one of the top selling DVD's ever. I can't wait for this to happen.

I also hope they release A Different World on DVD.

I see what you're saying, but if the Company that released Mary Tyler Moore on DVD went by sales for that for future releases, there would have been alot of angry fans of other shows out there.

I still don't think it's fair, each show is different, the fanbases are different, and each has a different sized fanbase, that's why I think it's unfair
