Disturbing news thread craze mystifies board members

Over the past few days a new trend has emerged. It appears that during that time some members of the SO message board have been posting disturbing news such as people dangling from meat hooks and a guy trying to elicit sex in exchange for the return of a stolen parrot. Some members are mystified as to why such depressing news would be posted on a regular basis on a message board like SO. However, moderators can only say that no rules bar such news provided they abide by the board policies.
