Default Favorite Rolling Stones album

I know Rolling Stones album versions vary between the U.S. and Europe up through 1967. Represented here are the UK versions.

Cool

There are tons of great Stones albums, but for some reason, Exile gets me going. I need to check out the earlier ones. I'm more familiar with the 60's songs than the entire albums.

My favorite is Let It Bleed. However, every album they recorded up through Tattoo You were good, it is what they have done since that leaves much to be desired.

I do think a 12-track album with the best material from both Steel Wheels and Voodoo Lounge would've made a steller album, although not on part with something like Sticky Fingers, Exile or Some Girls, but would've definately been the best thing since Tattoo You nevertheless

A big problem is quantity. In the CD age, the Stones feel the need to make their albums longer (60-70 minutes), whereas in the '60s and '70s, they were making 40-minute masterpieces. So we're stuck with at least 20-30 minutes of throwaway filler.

I agree with BuffySlayer - there are some great songs on Steel Wheels and Voodoo Lounge, but there's also a lot of garbage. I don't like Bridges To Babylon at all, though.

As for the four new songs on Forty Licks (2002), I like three of them. The one sung by Keith ("Losing My Touch") is creepy as hell. This is the same guy who sang the first verse to "Salt Of The Earth!?"

There were a couple of good tracks on Undercover and Dirty Work, but not enough to make them good albums. And IMO Steel Wheels and Voodoo Lounge were just plane terrible. I didn't like a single song on either one of those albums. And as far as Bridges To Babylon goes...I don't even want to go there. The single "Has Anybody Seen My Baby" sounded more like the Backstreet Boys the the Stones.

Here's what I like from Steel Wheels and Voodoo Lounge (which, overall, is a better album than its predecessor):

Steel Wheels
Sad Sad Sad
Mixed Emotions
Rock And A Hard Place
Almost Hear You Sigh
Break The Spell
Slipping Away

Voodoo Lounge
Love Is Strong
You Got Me Rocking
Sparks Will Fly
New Faces
I Go Wild
Brand New Car
Suck On The Jugular
Blinded By Rainbows
Thru And Thru

Bridges To Babylon

40 Licks (new tracks)
Don't Stop
Stealing My Heart
Keys To Your Love

Sorry to say, aside from Forty Licks, the only Stones album (cassette actually) I have is Steel Wheels. I was into all the singles I heard from them growing up but just never bothered to buy anything. That's why I was so looking forward to Forty Licks, though unfortunately it's incomplete and has shortened versions of songs. What may make my lack of Stones albums even worse: I do have Mick's She's The Boss. Hey, I thought it was good.
