Anyone else ever wondered this about the series finale?

Because it was cancelled and they aired the remaining episodes at that time.

I saw that CBS started airing the show in June of 79 after being on hiatus from Jan of 79. I thought when a show is cancelled, there is no series finale. Unless it was already planned that the 78-79 season was the last

Another example of this is Hangin' with Mr. Cooper. ABC canceled it in 1996 and aired the few remaining episodes in the summer of 1997.

Not necessarily. the finale may have been a way of making a transition for the show to a new world and when it was cancelled they just used this episode as the finale.

The show was pulled from the lineup but the show remained in production. If it had been canceled in January they wouldn't have had a full seasons worth of episodes or a series finale.
