Default Guns N' Roses

With the release of the greatest hits collection, the Velvet Revolver project and VH1's recent Behind the Music, it seems that Guns N' Roses are making the headlines again. This says a lot for a band that for the most part has been inactive for a decade ( I do not consider the current GN'R with only Axl the original member in the line up to really be GN'R whatever their name may be). I think a good deal of the attention that Guns have been getting of late is that a lot of us people who came of age during the late 1980's and the early 1990's really miss these guys. I know I sure do!
Guns was formed in 1985 as Axl Rose on lead vocals, Slash and Izzy Stradlin' on guitar, Duff McKagan on bass and Steven Adler on drums. This, the first and best line-up, were responsible for the landmark 1987 Appetite For Destruction, one of the greatest albums ever recorded, as well as the excellent EP GN'R Lies, which contianed the band's original demo and four new songs, which included the hit single "Patience" and a reworking of Appetite's "You're Crazy".
Adler was fired from the band in 1990 do to his extreme heroin use and was replaced by Matt Sorum, a talented drummer, but not as good as Adler. This line up recorded the underrated two disc collection Use Your Illusion I and II. Stradlin', the band's best songwriter, left the band shortly after and was replaced by Gilbey Clarke. Late 1993 saw the the release of the disappointing Spaghtti Incident, an album of classic rock and punk covers. By 1996 Guns N' Roses were no more.

What is your favorite Guns N' Roses album? Mine is Appetite For Destruction. This is simply one of the greatest albums ever recorded. I can still remember hearing it for the first time when I was 12 years old way back during the summer of 1988. It was a moment I will never forget. I knew that I had experienced something special. A landmark moment in rock history.

Though G N'r Lies has "Patience", which I never get tired of hearing, I picked Appetite because all the true classic stuff is on that album.

I know I'm alone when it comes to the Use Your Illusion albums. What everyone bashes about those 2 albums now is what everyone loved about it back in 1992. I mean, some of the drawn out ballads, like Coma, Estranged and especially November Rain... amazing stuff, and the album rocked. Appetite was a better rock album, but I thought Use Your Illusion 1 and 2 (I went with 1 on here) was what showed the potential GNR really had. Too bad they self-imploded thanks to Axl's larger-than-life ego (you know it must be really big if Slash can maintain a friendship with Michael Jackson, but yet Axl is just too self-obsessed and egotistical for Slash to associate with now)

Buffy, I've never bashed the Use Your Illusion albums. I love those two albums. I think those two albums showed a lot of growth by the band.

I mostly said that by the whole "man, this album sucked" attitude the VH1 Behind The Music special had about that album. I found it funny that they spent like 15 seconds bashing November Rain... but then VH1 never bothered to mention how also at one point, November Rain was the #1 video of all time on MTV on all their countdowns back when they used to do those. Everyone remembers Aerosmith's Alicia Silverstone trilogy, but GNR's trilogy (Don't Cry/November Rain/Estranged) seems to have been forgotten when I thought the GNR videos were much better than Aerosmith's vids.

Cool

Appetite, of course, but I have the Lies disk and that has some great stuff on it.

Funny how the song on Lies that caused so much controversy, "One In a Million", is a pretty lame song in every way.

What I love most about GN'R Lies is that is offers two sides of the band. The first four tracks, which were originally the band's demo, are very raw and you can pick up a bit of punk influence. I was in a garage band in high school and we used to do a cover of "Nice Boys" which is just a great blusey, raw, hard edged song. The other four songs on the album focus on a more mellow side of the band. "Patience" is one of the most beautiful ballads ever written I think. "One In A Million" is a great song, though I don't agree with all the lyrics. Actually, I just listened to Lies last night and I still consider it to be the band's second best album, the first being Appetite of course!

I thought they should've put aside their differences and finished that album they were planning back in 1994. The Spaghetti Incident was such a whimper to go out on.

You couldn't be more right about that. Though the true Guns N' Roses is long gone, Velvet Revolver is perhaps the next best thing. I bought the Velvet Revolver album two weeks ago and it just plane rocks. There hasn't been a rock album with this much energy in a long time. I just wish they could have gotten Izzy in the band.

I liked all of their stuff, but Appetite owns IMO. One of the greatest rocks albums ever made IMO.
