Smile "The Bank Account"… like,or dislike?

My wife and I liked this one a lot gang.
We liked the way Ward thought that the boys were only thinking of themselves, when all along they wanted him to have a great hunting jacket, that he needed and would enjoy for a long to come. A very unselfish act, on their part,we thought.

We also thought that Ward's facial expression was priceless when he opened that box and saw that the itim inside was for 'him', and not just a couple of 'unneeded' baseball gloves for Wally and the Beaver.

Those kids are ok in our book…even though they snuck out the girl's gym door at school, to go shopping. ;-)

It's not really a favorite of mine, but it is one of the first to show that the boys really think alot of their dad, who sometimes may be too quick to believe they've done something wrong.

It's also the first (I think) to bring out Ward's conservatism about money. He indirectly orders them to put their money in the school bank (my elem. school had no 'bank,' but that's another topic); then when they don't he has a reason to be angry with them because they said they would.

Notice that almost every time the boys-- Beaver, anyway-- get money, he pushes the idea of putting it into the bank. Even when Beaver gets $5 for mowing a lawn, and he is wondering what to do with the money, Ward says, "You should start a bank account with it." I think this is after Beaver has already had to put $3500 in the bank because Ward made him sell the sports car he won in the raffle. I suppose Ward's money-saving mentality comes from living through the depression on a family farm, but still managing to go to college some way.

I really love this episode, especially the part at the end where Ward opens up the box and sees his jacket. It was so sweet.

And tdr, I agree with you about Ward and money. Good theory.

I like this episode a lot, except for the fact that we learn that Ward is a hunter, but that's another story.

In any event, what I always like about this episode is the touching scene near the end, where the boys present their present to Ward---with that slow, sentimental music playing in the background. It still brings a tear to my eye whenever they show that scene.

Well Boomer I'm glad we're not the only ones who gets a tear in their eyes from that slow sentimental music in some scenes. It just 'touches' us somehow ,you know?

(Sigh)

I'ts really funny how no matter how many times I've seen these episodes---it must run into the hundreds by now---that particular scene still touches me. The other one that brings a lump to my throat is the one in which Aunt Martha comes to visit, and she makes Beaver wear those hideous clothes. The specific touching scene in question here is the one in which Ward hides out in the garage, and has a change of clothes all ready for the Beaver. Gets me every time---and has since the first time I ever saw that episode many many years ago.

I know what you mean Boomer. I'm looking forwad to seeing more eps that I've missed in the past, just to catch those kinds of scenes.
It's a combination of good acting, good writing and good music scores in the background.

I guess that's what makes this sitcom so 'special' to us pal. (Smile)

I love the part in that ep where Beaver gives Ward a kiss on the cheek.

You know Boomer, whenever I get in one of those 'down-in-the-dumps' moods,I just pop any one of my Beaver tapes in the ole' vcr unit, sit back and relax a bit. That helps me a lot and it brings me 'up' to a good mood all day long.

I also like the Andy Griffith Show.
One of the Best out there IMO.
