Default Becker Interesting Facts

Nancy Travis was originally hired to play Chris for just four episodes, and at the end of Season 4 was to disappear after John Becker (Ted Danson) chose to be with Reggie Kostas (Terry Farrell). But the producers decided to fire Farrell and keep Travis on as a full time character.

There have been numerous references to Danson's former series "Cheers" (1982). Cheers co-stars 'George Wendt' , Rhea Perlman and Kelsey Grammer have all appeared on the show, Wendt playing the barman to Danson's character (On "Cheers" Danson played the barman to Wendt's character) and Grammer playing an alcoholic friend of Danson's Harvard-graduate doctor (on "Cheers" and "Frasier" Danson played an ex-alcoholic and Grammer played the Harvard-graduate doctor.

In one episode, Bob is walking out of Reggie's Diner as Becker walks in. He says, "Out of my way Gulliver," referring to Ted Danson's role in Gulliver's Travels (1996) (TV)

In the episode "The Ex-Files" Bob discovers Becker was in a college quartet which was famous for singing "Goodnight Sweetheart". In Three Men and a Baby (1987) Ted Danson sung "Goodnight Sweetheart" with Tom Selleck and Steve Guttenberg.

In the episode where George Wendt guest starred, Becker said to him "hey whacha reading? a book." This was one of Norm Peterson's first lines to Diane on the Cheers pilot episode.

I agree. Chris's story would've been best limited to 4 episodes. Becker "jumped the shark" because of her.

Oh yeah, that's true! I laughed when Norm said that on Cheers. And what about Becker asking the bartender? His subtle lines like that just make me laugh.

I couldn't stand the Chris character and I am convinced that is what killed the show.

Plus the move to Sunday didn't help.
And getting rid of Bob was the last straw.
(though the fate of the show was decided at that point anyway- half a season on Wednesday ending the show)

If the show stayed where it was on Monday it may have survived with Chris.
But I think if they kept Reggie that it would have done better on Sunday and certainly better on Monday.

If they just would have left things alone (Reggie and no Chris, on Mondays) Becker would be following Everybody Loves Raymond this year and still going strong.

also, on the show where Kellsy Grammer guest starred, one of the first things Becker said to him was "The last time I saw you, was at a bar in Boston!"

As I'm sure everyone knows "Cheers" was set in Boston.

And, Becker mentioned a couple times that he served his residency at Boston General.

Also, John Mahoney (Frasiers father) guest starred once.

Also, "Cheers" & "Becker" were both made by Paramount.

Wasn't there an early (1st season?) episode of Cheers where Carla had to go to anger management to keep Sam from being sued after she attacked an obnoxious customer?
