Red face Teeth issues

Oh boy guys. So it's bad enough being in outpatient therapy everyday of the week, and physical therapy 2-3 times a week for my shoulder... but I went to the orthodontist yesterday, and he said I definitely need my wisdom teeth pulled, PLUS I [75% chance] need a root canal on one of my front teeth.

My sister had a root canal at 10 years old and is now practically petrified to go back to the dentist, because is afraid she might need another one. I'm so scared. I've had some pretty tough prods and pokes in the last week, including 2 Cortisone shots which almost killed me.. but a root canal?!

Has anyone here had one? Do they hurt? Tell me truthfully so I know what to expect And what about wisdom teeth? what's that like?

I've had all my wisdom out and a root canal done because I chipped a tooth or something and never said something so it got all crusty. It doesn't hurt at all. If you feel any pain when getting it, just tell your dentist person and they'll give you some more novicane.

If they deaden your mouth you won't feel anything.

I will not get a root canal myself, not since somebody told me what it all entails. But that's me. When I had to get a tooth pulled that was embedded in my gum AND get 12 fillings, I decided to get them all done at the same time, so I opted for sedation dentristry, where they totally put you under with sleeping pills. I don't remember a thing from that day, even when my boyfriend drove me home. But I'd do it again. Fortunately, I've never had to get my wisdom teeth out. I hope things work out for you.

I need my wisdom teeth out, as well. UGH. It's going to be ****ing expensive to have them pulled, tho.

eek, about a year ago my dentist thought I needed a root canal, but thankfully it turned out that i didn't. There's still a chance that you'll fall in the 25%!!! Wisdom teeth, just make sure your friends know and bring you lots of soft ice cream! When my friend had them out I made a lot of runs to the Dairy Queen for him.
You'll be numb/out for it anyway (root canal or wisdom teeth), just try not to think about it too much beforehand.

Ughhh, I hate Cortisone shots soo much. Once during an intermission I had to get 2....thought I was going to die backstage...but they can be a lifesaver if you have to finish a performance, just a veryveryvery painful lifesaver..

When I was in 8th grade I had a tooth pulled out. I forget why. The dentist gave me some medicine so that I didn't feel any pain. I could feel the instrument he used to twist it out but it didn't hurt at all, not even when I went home. It did feel weird having a tooth pulled out root and all (I'm guessing it was a permanent tooth).

I had to get braces that same year and had them until Spring of 2002. A canine and a bicuspid grew weird (I had a tooth that grew above my others at the gum) so they had to adjust it. Now I have a canine and a bicuspid that are out of order.

My dentist said I will never grow wisdom teeth and consider myself lucky after the experience of two sisters getting theirs pulled.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed about 10 years ago. It wasn't so bad. They put me to sleep (for about one hour)... no pain when I woke up. In fact, I don't really remember much pain even days after. My mouth was sore, of course. And, only liquids for a day or two. You are also not supposed to use a straw for about one week.

As for root canals, I also had one done back in the mid-'80s. I'd rather not go through those, but it wasn't really painful... more like uncomfortable.
Were you told why a root canal was probably needed? I'm assuming it's because of extensive decay which has reached the root of the tooth. That's why mine was necessary.

root canals aren't too bad - unless you are allergic to the freezing, which makes it all but unbearable

i am allergic to the freezing pretty much as a direct result of how much they had to give me when getting my wisdom teeth pulled; mine werent growing up/down, they were pushing straight forward under the gums, and they were impacted so they had to slice open the gums and pick out the teeth piece by piece. I had to go back 3 times for 2 - 4 hours each.

i would say that if the teeth are poking up at all, it should be a breeze for any halfway decent dentist.

I had my wisdom teeth pulled when I was about your age. I had all 4 done at once, so they knocked me out. Yay! After that wore off though, it hurt quite a bit. but 4 Advil helped. The worst thing was not being able to eat any solid food for a few days and having to constantly stick cotton in your mouth.

That sounds crappy. Last time I went to the dentist he mentioned my wisdom teeth and that they might have to be pulled out and such and I've never had an operation in my life so I'm like eeek! I'm going to the dentist Monday for a checkup, xrays, cleaning, the usual stuff. I'm terrible for flossing though. I don't floss my teeth often enough. I do brush and use mouthwash everyday though.
