IF a TV show finishes a TV Season ranked #54, can that usually be a sign that the - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

show is near cancellation? I'm asking because i found out 8simplesrules finished th season ranked #54 and I don't know of any shows that go from 54 back to the top 30 again. To me, it's a sign of lost viewers and that it can only get worse. Two examples i can think of is Mork and Mindy and Good Times. Once both shows fell out of the top 30 they ever got back there again. What do you think?

if I recall, Coach fell from #6 to #55 one season, because ABC moved it to a night where they were dead (up against NBC's Fresh Prince, and Murphy Brown on CBS), but they stuck with it and moved it AGAIN and the next season it went back into the top 20.

I think it depends on how it does up against other shows. For instance, it may win the night but be #54 because the night doesn't have high viewership(like Friday or Saturday Nights). 8SR was in 2nd place most of the time(3rd place during AI). That's part of the reason it's been moved to TGIF this year.

Really? I think Friday Night is a bad night too. a Good night would be Monday

coming in 54 is terrible.
but its also nothing to be proud of.

I think 8SR will stay for a few more seasons, because even at 54 -- its one of ABC's highest rated shows.

It is not a sign of cancelation. Looking at the season rankings is very overrated and usually only people not knowing anything about TV look at.

Amen, Pav. You have to look at those rankings in the context of other questions: how competitive is the time period; how is the lead-in doing; is the show scheduled on a night with high or low viewership; is the show on a lower-rated network; has the show improved on whatever was previously airing in that time period; are the show's ratings trending upward or downward; is the show expensive to produce; does the network's parent company have financial interest in syndication; is this a new show with a lot of creative potential or a played-out show on its last legs.

I see these posts talking about season rankings again and again, but the execs running the TV networks look at many, many other factors when deciding to cancel or renew.

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday seem to be the highest-rated nights. Friday and Saturday are defintely the lowest.

Saturday is so low rated that for the first time in history no network is going to have a script show running that night.

I noticed that.

Here's some things I just put together looking at ratings.

Disclaimer: It is SUMMER, almost everything(except reality shows) is in reruns, so viewership IS lower, but I still think this is a pretty accurate representation.

Monday July 5th

Highest rated show was at 10pm-CSI: Miami with a 8.7/16

Tuesday July 6th

Highest rated show was at 10pm-Law and Order: SVU 7.1/12(barely edging out CBS Big Brother 5 and The Amazing Race).

Wednesday July 7th

Highest rated show was at 10pm-Law and Order 7.4/13

Thursday July 8th

Highest rated show was at 9pm-CSI 9.7/17

Friday July 9th

Highest rated show was at 9pm-Dateline with Bin Laden's Half-Brother 5.2/10

I used the last weekend in June, instead of the 4th of July weekend because of the lower viewership on the holiday.

Saturday June 27th

Highest-rated show was at 9pm(barely)-America's Most Wanted with a 4.4/9

Sunday June 28th

Highest-rated show was at 7pm-60 Minutes with a 7.3/15

54th is not bad, considering the context. It was in the top 30 before AI premiered, then took a huge dive and finshed off a bit worse than in the first season.

Also, the top 50 tends to get clutter with limited run series. This year it was "My Big fat Fiance," two editions of "Survivor," three of "The Bachelor," 3 of "Average Joe" as well as "The Simple Life" 'The Apprentice" and two editions of "American Idol." For shows that actual aired during the course of the entire season, "8 Simple rules" ranked a not-too-bad 36th.

Plus, it ranked 49th in adults, and although it's not that big of a difference from its overall rating, it's still a plus. 'the District," for intance, ranked 61st in viewers but 118th in adults.

Thursday, Monday, Wednesday, Tuesday, Sunday, Friday & Saturday.

This past July 4th week actually set a record low in viewers for the network. The six networks together drew an average of 28.4 million viewers, down 10% from last season.

that is strange, District is not a show I'd picture with a large teen audience

No, but it was a HUGE ratings hit. The Amazing Race which followed it also was a HUGE ratings hit.

The first hour of "Big Brother 5" did a 6.2/11 for CBS. ABC and NBC tied as a repeat of "Last Comic Standing" and episodes of "8 Simple Rules" and "I'm With Her" both averaged a 3.8/7 for the hour. Actually, "The District" is (or was) extremely older skewing, while "8 Simple Rules" would have been younger skewing, except for the fact that "AI" stole most of the audience away from it.

As for last Tuesday. "SVU" was the highestr ated show, as usual, although "The Amazing Race" drew the most viewers on the night. More people per household watch shows like "Big Brother" and "TAR" than "L&O".
