Question Stephanie Mills?

Has anyone heard of what's been going on with the singer Stephanie Mills? I liked her but I really haven't heard her sing much these days.

Stephanie is still touring about 6 months out of the year. The rest of the year she spends at her home in Charlotte, NC. She also does occasional gospel plays. She was one of the headliners at the Hampton Jazz Festival in Hampton, VA a couple weeks ago. I saw Stephanie in concert a couple years ago and she still has the voice and the moves. I always loved her version of "Home" much better than Diana Ross'(no disrespect to Diana). Stephanie really doesn't need to make any new music, she has enough hits to her credit. Although I'm sure if she did make a new album, I'm sure she could still turn it out just like Teena Marie is with her new CD.

Stephanie Mills is such a great singer. She sang songs like "Never Knew Love Like This Before" and some other stuff that I heard on the radio.

She was/is a good singer. I read that it is hard for urban adult comtemporary acts like her to get record deals because these acts don't generate as much revenue as the rappers and the younger performers like Alicia Keys though there is still a market for her style (Patti Labelle, Teena Marie have made money for their record companies). I think I read that she is starting her own label, but I'm not sure.

One funny thing about her career, in the early 80s she "crossed over"- Never Knew Love Like this Before hit #5 on the easy listening chart although it is not a ballad and not really a soft sounding song and it hit #6 pop and won 2 grammies but it stopped at #12 on the soul chart. By the time she had a #1 hit on the black chart her records were ignored on the pop side. She had 5 #1 singles there from 1986-90 and only one charted pop and that one only got to #85. This was a time when anything that sounded "too black" would not get much if any pop play and was basically blacklisted by MTV.

Stephanie appeared on DMX's The Great Depression cd when he sampled her Whatcha Gonna Do With My Lovin song. I forgot the name of his song she appeared on but she actually sang on the song. I like her songs You're Puttin A Rush On Me & Something In The Way U Make Me Feel. I didn't know she lives in Charlotte now.

Thanks Dr. Jazz........ I know I heard her voice on one of my daughters cartoons. She was singing. Her beautiful voice is so recognizable.
