At first it was Meeker and then it was changed to Meehan.

Yes, it was changed because at the beginning of the series, Mary Tyler Moore was married to Richard Meeker in real life, and so his name was used as a sort of in-joke, but when they divorced a few years later, Laura's maiden name was quietly changed to Meehan. Hope that helps!
