"don't go,.. "

David goes to new york for his "friend's" funeral. he tells maddie that he used to be married and sorta told her what happened. maddie follows him to new york. they talk. she meets the ex. they fly home together.

this episode really shows the growth of maddie's feelings for dave. whille i hated the musical number, it did provide a part of maddie's mind to show us her feelings for him are there, even though she would deny it.

loved the scene of the cab under the bridge with the world trade centre in the background shining with in it's majesty. that in itself will tug at my heart as i was spending the weekend there at the marriot just 18 days before it was crushed by the towers. photos like that really get to me.

not one of my favourite episodes, but i will rate it a bit higher because i feel it defined a moment in ther relationship.

My goodness! This is right in my top 3 for favorite episodes of Moonlighting. To me it is a practically perfect episode: Great setup disagreement about responsibility and acting maturely. Then David has to leave suddenly to attend family funeral. Maddie discovers David's early marriage....and then she has that dream which is one terrific scene and one terrific song. (BTW, as I understand it Billy Joel wrote that song for/about Moonlighting's David Addison and once Glenn Caron heard it/was shown it....he worked it into an episode.)

But here is where things really come full circle...once Maddie goes to New York and finds out about David's failed early marriage--she finds out exactly how responsible and matureDavid was at an early age.... and then later when she finds out the whole truth and nothing but the truth about David's ex-wife, we discover there are certain things in David's past that he just cannot deal with, and that a lot of his persona and attitude is really a front for those insecurities.

I think the argument in the hotel room about David not wanting to take Maddie to the funeral is a really funny scene. M: "I was looking forward to this funeral!" D: "Here. Pick any other funeral and I will take you. Here's one sounds like fun. Open casket, short eulogy, followed by dinner and an open bar. ..."

I liked this episode a lot too. It's also in my top 3!
Liked the musical scene a lot, allthough it is very clear that neither Cyb nor Bruce are great dancers. Liittle stiff in the hips but anyway they kiss great though!
And the scene with Maddy sitting on the bed waiting for Dave that's a classic!!
Trying to explain herself and I was sitting for my TV thinking...TELL HIM YOU LOVE HIM STUPID GIRL!!
But NO ofcourse not, she'd rather die than tell him that, although later on in the show she doesn't have that much trouble telling him. I counted 5 "I love you David"s.
But only 1 "I love you Maddie" out of David's mouth!!
Anyway great episode! My nr 3.

i remembered you said it was one your favs before cindy. i realize all that you said is true. even all the psychoanalitical stuff you said is there and very apparent. the hidden emotion is there between the two, and even hint at it in the end. on the plane, maddie said she wanted half a shoulder, and he replied "for the next 20 or 30 years". it's like he knew they would be together one day.
the song and dance number did nothing for me except what i previously said.
it was a great episode to a degree and that was how i feel it did define their current feelings. other than that, i just don't see the appeal.
not a bad episode.

Sadly, the only thing I remember about this episode it the dance number. I wish I could remember more, because everybody always goes crazy when this episode is brought up.

'cept me. i'd put it in the middle if it weren't for defining their emotions. i gave it a 6. otherwise maybe a 5 on the rating.

Well TAZ actually David has mentioned his deep feelings for Maddie several times.

First time he tells her he loves her is in bed in I Am Curious....Maddie at the very end....although we can't hear it because the background music is blaring, Bruce Willis reported this fact in US magazine in an interview from 1989.. I posted this info on my site on this page http://www.davidandmaddie.com/doit-cast.htm/

He also announces in front of her and the entire office in Trip to the Moon that he is head over heels in love with her.....so that definitely counts!

He also says to her I love you Maddie in the laundromat in Trip to the Moon. And although Maddie is not present, but her father is, David admits to Mr. Hayes his intense feelings for Maddie in Father Knows Last when he tells Mr. Hayes...."Do I love her? Do I want to marry her? Mr. Hayes, I would give up my life for her." Several times during that same conversation with Mr. Hayes David uses the "L" word or a reasonable colorful facsimile of it to get his point across.

There may even be a couple of other times he relates his feelings to her....

besides all of us have known from the get-go exactly how he feels about her..... actions speak quite a bit louder than words here.

I never doubted about Dave's feelings for Maddie,
I just onlyheard him say once to Maddie that he loves her, ofcourse he also says he's fallen head over heals in love with her in the office, but the laundromat scene was the only intimate scene between just the two of them where he says it only to her and when you can actually hear it.
BTW the Laundromat scene was also in A trip to the Moon.
Anyway we definitely know they love eachother. no doubt about that!!!

Big Man is one of those episodes in which I love many scenes from it, but I don't like the episode. I think it's because I viewed Tess as a distant threat (just like Gillian). I do love the hotel room scene (one of the best acted in ML), the final scene on the airplane, and the opening sequences of course. I find the dance scenes kind of wooden (Sandahl Bergman, though, is phenomenal as usual -- I loved her in All That Jazz). Cybill looked downright uncomfortable in the dancing department. Bruce looked more at ease. This is an episode that I have not watched all the way through in many years.

It's funny how people view episodes differently. This is one of my top favorites. I think nearly every scene is perfect. It starts with the great arguing and banter. Then it turns amazingly serious. Bruce and Cybill are both wonderful in this episode. It gives us a rare glimpse into David's life before he met Maddie. For two people who have such trouble admitting their feelings, they are remarkably vulnerable with each other here. I absolutely love the scene where David won't take Maddie to the funeral. In the middle of a fairly serious episode, you have this absurd scene where they are arguing like two old married people. I didn't really understand all the great subtleties of the dance number until I watched it many times. I think it's just a terrific episode!

i'm still on my group date!

ok-i'll only say it once-i knew david had been married and felt betrayed by that marriage! ok-i'm done.

this episode had everything-pathos, sweetness, a musical! and a great fight. this was better than the best.

maddie to david:
i'm not mad at you. i hate you. i loathe the ground underwhich you bourough

maddie yelling 'get in here' at the top of her lungs had me giggling until i almost couldn't stop.

davids excuse:
waking up on the floor of a bar with a cop taking your pulse.

the fight was about how irresponsible david is-and by showing that david had married his pregnant girlfriend i learned how truly responsible david is and of course, traditional.

the musical number was wonderfully sexy and was a simply beautiful, creative way to express maddie's fears about david.
also, seeing david sexuality in his dancing, my crush has taken a serious turn. (not to mention his kissing)

i did do an unintentional flinch at seeing the twin towers- and there was a kind of gasp around the room, but you know what, with the themes of death and betrayal and david in a dark cab confused and drunk-well, it worked.

i loved david's monologe about his first marriage. beautiful writing.

wonderful uncomfortable intensity when david found maddie in his hotel room. again, maddies monologe was beautiful writing.

the song - new york state of mind.

no matter how hard i try, i could never do this episode justice. it is truly excellent and engrossing. i really feel quite inadequate in expressing the pleasure it gave me and everyone in this room.

and a personal note-a really wonderful man has asked me to marry him, and honestly he's just perfect for me in every way. i've been dating (innocently) a lot before i make my decision. in a wierd way, moonlighting is helping me with that decision. even thought this man is really just right-maybe it's best not to get married if it's not to someone who will challenge and occasionally surprise. i really don't know. i do know the writers of moonlighting are making me uncomfortable about going the easy way.
