Default Showing up for work is important!

At my job I have learned that there will always be idiots who never show up when they're supposed to work! I hate when people do that. You're getting paid to work for crying out loud and if you don't show up you don't get paid. Plus, it hurts the other employees when we need to cover shifts.

Anyway, there's this girl at my work who rarely ever shows up when she has to work or calls people up to work for her at the last minute! When she DOES happen to come she's not exactly the best worker. She hardly does anything and just talks! I work in a deli at a grocery store so there is plenty of stuff to do especially during closing shift. Well, lately she's been getting pretty bad. At the moment she got a second job as an usher at a venue for an 11 day festival we have here in town. Well, I don't think she paid attention to what days she was scheduled to work at the deli because yesterday she didn't come because she had to work at the venue. If you work 2 jobs you have to may sure you're not working both at the same time! There has been a few times awhile ago where she'd call and ask me to work for her the very next day. I would usually cuz I normally have nothing to do on the weekends and need the money anyway, but she never fills out her calendar for when to work. If she has other plans, don't sign up to work or vise versa.

So, today I was scheduled to be off. Planned on just sitting around all day on the holiday and doing absolutely nothing! But, then I got a phone call from the president/boss at my work asking if I could come in today. I had no choice, I had to say yes. If I said "No, I'm busy", He'd ask what I was doing and eventually get out of me that I have no plans. Well, I get to work and I found out the girl AND her sister (who works there too) didn't show up and just weren't coming in. Perfect. Actually there were 5 of us that were working, and 4 of us all came in extra! The girl was supposed to come in at 8 and the boss calls her up saying she has to come in. Well, she shows up at 9:30 instead and the boss asks to talk to her. I found out that when he talked to her he said "Go home and never come back again!" It was about time she got fired, she had been doing this way too long! I'm glad the boss was tough and did that, cuz it just hurts the rest of us to keep letting her "work" there and getting away with stuff. The only reason she was probably still working there before was because her mom is a cashier. Her mom is really nice and does her work, but she KNOWS her daughter is like that and doesn't work good if she shows up! I wonder what will happen when she finds out her daughter was fired. Yeah, so bosses need to get tough and fire people like this! Some bosses will just keep letting it go and not do anything about it.

In the military, if you don't show up for work, you get an Article 15, reduction in pay, loss of a stripe, correctional custody, or a combination of those punishments.

I can't stand when people do that. I mean if you're really sick or there's a family crisis or something I can understand, but there's no excuse for not coming to work because you just don't feel like it. Then those people have the nerve to moan and groan when they can't pay their bills.

A procedure used in the military (especially the Army and Air Force) to give a commander the authority to impose a non-judicial punishment. Basically, it's a form of punishment before it gets to a court-martial (where a military members is tried in a military court for a particular offense) and the point of where the offender gets a possible discharge from the military less than honorable conditions.

We have those in JROTC. We've got the court and everything... although they just like calling it "getting kicked out"

OMG, I don't know why this girl wasn't fired sooner!! The fact that her mom worked there was no excuse.

Yeah, that used to piss me off with my old job, people not coming in, whether calling in or just not showing up which we would get alot of. A person would get hired, be there for a few days, then stop showing up. Alot of these people would be in their 20's or 30's and I would always think "Don't you have bills & rent you need to pay?" Yeah, it wasn't the perfect job, but it was a job. I guess they figured they could just get a job real quick somewhere else. I, myself, hate looking for a job, hate filling out applications, hate it when they tell you that they're get back with me in a few weeks..etc. It's so aggravating!! So I stick it out no matter how irritated I get at my job.

But, sorry to hear about your situation. Hope things get better now that this slacker is gone.

That's too bad that you had to work on your day off. Nice that the slacker got canned.

In the future, try to let your answering machine pick up the phone, or better yet, Caller ID. I never answer the phone without knowing who's calling.

So do I. I despise writing cover letters. But my current situation has driven me to the breaking point, so it's time to look.

I would if I had either of those things! In my family, when it comes to phones we are pretty old fashioned. Gosh, I'm surprised we even have a cordless phone! Yeah, there's no answering machine or Caller ID in our house. My mom's philosophy is "if it's really important, they'll call back!". We don't even have cell phones! When I live at school this fall the school provides your own voicemail so i'll finally have that!

I show up at least an hour before to get prepared, relax my mind and soul, and also face challenges as well.
