Why do shows sometimes have different openings in syndication than they did on the original broadcast?

I dont know. I know Full House and Who's The Boss? use syndication openings. Full House always does and Whos The boss? occasinouly does.

The funny thing is ABC Family shows all the original openings for BMW on that channel. |

Usually its for the purpose of allowing more time for commericals so they often times use shorter openings. Because episodes are often edited extensivley for syndication.

The thing is Disney Channel shows alot more commercials than ABC Family does. ABC Family does very little editing on BMW, and when they do it's for time not content unlike Disney Channel I think there's a syndicated opening for Full House as well |

I know that on many shows form the 1950's & 1960's the original openings contained plugs for the sponsor of the show, which usually will never be the same in syndication. Also I've heard that sometimes stars of the show now have different names (i.e. married or divorced) and want their new name on the opening.

They did the same to Mama's Family. The first two seasons it was on, it was on NBC and they had a longer opening...It had Harvey Korman in it as Alstair (or whatever) and he would explain what you were about to watch. After he finished, it would go right to the regular opening credits...
In syndication now, they cut out the Alstair part of the opening credits for S1 & S2. I think they've left the opening credits for S3-S6 pretty much intact.

the TBS opening to Sex And The City is a lot shorter than the HBO opening credits... you don't even see the bus with the picture of Sarah Jessica Parker splashing her.

Happy Days had one as well. I think it even had a syndicated title.

Just Shoot Me--All episodes contain the open from the last several seasons, early seasons included a pencil breaking in two and later a camera shutter, if I recall right.
Cheers--Abridged opening |
