Default Twist in the Mary-Kate Olsen "eating disorder" story

Mary-Kate's 'Health Issue' Questioned

When news of Mary-Kate Olsen's hospitalization broke on June 22, her longtime publicist, Michael Pagnotta, issued this vague statement to the media: "Mary-Kate Olsen recently entered a treatment facility to seek professional help for a health-related issue. She is thankful for the encouragement and support of her friends and family who are with her every step of the way." Now Us Weekly is reporting that the treatment center is Cirque Lodge in Orem, Utah. Cirque Lodge's Web site says it specializes in the "effective treatment of individuals and families afflicted with the disease of alcoholism and other drug addictions."

That and reports from tabloid publications owned by American Media have fueled rumors that Mary-Kate is being treated for more than an eating disorder. Pagnotta has "categorically" denied to USA Today and other media outlets that drugs are involved. But why is Mary-Kate at a rehab facility that specializes in drug and alcohol abuse treatment? When Us Weekly asked Pagnotta this question, he responded: "It is a multi-treatment facility, which is perfectly capable of accommodating her needs. Mary-Kate has a team of people working with her, including a renowned psychologist in this field and a nutritionist. Mary-Kate Olsen is being treated for an eating-related disorder." Pagnotta was even more emphatic when he told The New York Post, "The bottom line is that Mary-Kate was not admitted for drugs, period."

See a photo of Mary-Kate snuggling with her boyfriend, David Katzenberg, son of DreamWorks studio head Jeffrey Katzenberg, when they attended Game 1 of the NBA Finals on June 6.

Ashley Olsen visited her twin sister this week where Us Weekly reports they had a loving reunion. The twins' father, Dave Olsen, says the two embraced. "Obviously Mary-Kate was very happy, and so was Ashley," Mr. Olsen told Us. He said Mary-Kate has had an eating disorder for two years.

One type of eating disorder is anorexia nervosa. WebMD explains what it is, what increases the risk, and treatment options.

2 years? And people just started to notice? Wow. A friend of mine was bulimic for about 6 months before someone noticed, and she's not famous.

I find the coke thing hard to believe. My brother is convinced it's true because it was on the cover of the National Enquirer or Star or something, but I guess I'm still viewing her as Michelle.

That's what i was thinking, seems like a long time, and anorexia is also a lot harder to hide than bulimia.
Although I never noticed that Mary-Kate was that much smaller than Ashley. They're both quite thin anyways.

That's pretty scandelous. This is also the same place where Nicole Richie went for her heroin addiction. hmm. Well, I suppose the truth will be out eventually. I wonder how Danny is handling all of this.

I wouldn't be surprised. Amphetamines, stimulants, and methylphenadates cause a huge risk for eating disorders, because once you get into using, you just... stop eating. I felt like my body was shutting down, because I just stopped eating for 3 months. It was not pretty.

Any addiction; anorexia, bulimia, drugs, alchohol, etc. is serious! I feel sorry for her or anyone in this condition. I sure hope that she can overcome this.

Alcoholism is a very tough condition that you can never get rid of. And that there is no cure.

Yes, this is true. It is a lifelong addiction and struggle. But some people do overcome it.(meaning that they can live without it!)

Yep ... recovered alcoholics can never drink again, even social drinking (unless you're Superman and can control it). Unfortunately I still haven't grasped that concept yet and will remain oblivious until I open my eyes; but I've got a few more years until 21.

Then she's one of the lucky ones. I know a few people who can do that, and I just sit there and am like "...wow." Unfortunately, for most people it's not the case
