TIME OUT FROM HOLLYWOOD SUITS ACTRESS JUST FINE
Author: Luaine Lee Knight Ridder Dateline: PASADENA, CALIF. Bonnie Bedelia is a rarity: an actress who finds more pleasure in living than she does in acting. The woman who played Bruce Willis' wife in two Die Hard movies and Harrison Ford's deceptive mate in Presumed Innocent is now serving as captain of the San Francisco Police Department in Lifetime's The Division. But if she had her druthers, she'd probably be painting her next composition or rewiring a disabled lamp. "I do have a passion to do intense acting again, but I'm not going to spend my life by the phone worrying about it, wondering about it, complaining that it's not there," Ms. Bedelia says. "It's got to drop into my lap. At this point in my life, it has to be someone who wants that from me, who seeks me out, if someone wants to work with me, chances are I'm going to want to work with them. But I'm not going to go digging and scraping. There's a finite amount of time we have here, and there's a lot of lives to be lived." Ms. Bedelia has done her share. She already was a mature 10-year-old when she was cast in her first Broadway show. At 7, she had competed with 500 other girls to earn a place at the School of American Ballet. At 8, she performed in her first play. "I grew up in little neighborhoods, tenement neighborhoods," she says over lunch. "People who lived in my neighborhood worked in garages and factories and I was going to school on scholarship on the west side of New York - private schools and working with George Balanchine - so it was kind of schizoid, and they didn't connect. So I grew up in a schizophrenic thing." She was an admitted workaholic. By the time she was 19, she'd been in six Broadway plays. She was attending high school, working on a daytime soap and helping to support the family. Ms. Bedelia, 58, also is the mother of two grown sons - one is working in New York and the other is an architect in Seattle. Ten years ago, Ms. Bedelia married for the second time, though she'd always vowed to remain single after her divorce from Kenneth Luber in 1969. "I met Michael MacRae on a movie that Brian Dennehy had written and produced, called Shadow of a Doubt. He played my lawyer. We met at the end of November '94 and married in March '95," she says. "Suddenly, I found myself a resident of Washington State,'' she said. "All my work for the last 20 years has come via the telephone." Still, she admits acting has lost its luster. "So much is based on material and who you're working with and what it is you're making and if you really feel you're part of a creative process," she says. "Going onto a soundstage at 6 o'clock in the morning and coming out at 7 or 8 o'clock at night, it doesn't hold the joy and fascination for me that it used to. I still enjoy that little period between 'action' and 'cut.' I can still have fun in there." ------------------- Well, I paid money for that article cuz I'm a loser. But yeah...theres some pretty interesting stuff in there...![]() By the way, I know for a fact she was married in between the two marriages they talk about. She was married to director Robert Lieberman in the early 80's. |

Thanks for posting that, Tara. (By the way, you're not a loser. I probably would have done the same for something about Nancy.) Very informative. Plus, another hint at cancellation if Bonnie's not happy doing it anymore. I'm being pessimistic and looking at the worst-case scenario, but I tend to do that best. |
