Default The Super Mario Bros. Super Show Volume 1: Mario Mania DVD Review

From my ToonZone.net post:

The Super Mario Bros. Super Show Volume One: Mario Mania heads to DVD on Tuesday, July 6. This first set of the two Italian plumbers features the first week of the series, which includes four 'Mario' episodes and one 'Zelda' episode, at a generous price of $14.99 and a runtime of 110 minutes. DiC and UAV Co. have done a nice job in releasing classic DiC series on DVD, and this set again is no exception.

The series featured live action and animation. Wrestler Lou Albano voiced and played Mario in both animation and live action in the series, with Danny Wells playing sidekick Luigi.

The packaging for this set is intriguing. It's only a one disc set and on the disc there is a photo of the duo battling their enemy. The back cover of the case has five episode titles, original airdate and an one-line synopsis of each episode.

The menu navigation is quite simple and easy to use. The theme song for The Super Mario Bros. Super Show plays in the background during the main menu screen. The video and audio are quite good and much better than anything we've seen on television. It's not crystal clear, but close to it, especially for 1989. You can also play all the episodes at once with the Play All feature or play them one by one in the episode selection feature.

This set has special features as well. There is a 12-question interview with executive producer Andy Heyward. He answers all twelve questions, which were sent in by fans all around the world via on-line. This is very interesting and all fans should watch this because you will learn something you didn't know about the series. There is also a section titled, "Live Action Sequences." These are the live action sequences which play before and after the animation in each episode. Guest stars such as Nicole Eggert (Charles in Charge) and Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters) make appearances to visit Mario and Luigi in their Brooklyn plumbing house. They are also intact in the actual episodes on this set and used in the special features too. Some fans might hate that they did that, some might like the idea, because if you want to just watch the live action, and not the animation, you can watch the Live Action special feature. Personally, I don't see a reason why they made a new section on it, since they are in the episodes too. However, it's not a major issue. Hopefully we eventually get all the episodes on DVD.

So get off your computer chair paisanos and buy the DVD. It's fun to watch, especially with pizza!

I need this DVD so bad, seeing as how I already have a single ep. DVD of SMB3: The New Super Mario Adventures on DVD!

This would be cool to see SMB: Super Show again, even though DiC will most likely plaster their Dic Kid in Bed logo w/ that stupidly annoying Wonderful World of Dic logo like they did w/ almost all of their classic cartoons (save for Heathcliff and/or Inspector Gadget), including SMB3: The New Super Mario Adventures.

I used to love that show. It was my favorite program with Mario & Luigi and the gang. I remember "The Legend of Zelda" where it was on Friday's episode. That brings back memories for me. I do miss that show. I also remember the voiceover announcer was saying "This episode is brought to you by Domino's Pizza. Nobody delivers better!" That was the phrase that I remember for years since Domino's Pizza usually sponsored the show. If you want to watch the show, you should watch it on Yahooligans. Check out this show on this website:

I got away with cheating my punishment in middle school by watching this show once, but I was caught another time. I would've gotten away with twice if I didn't forget to change the channel back to where my mom and dad had it before they got up.
