I been watching this show all afternoon and forgot that the facial expressions of Don Rickles always made me laugh when i watched this show back in 1989 in local syndication. I also liked the chemistry between CPO Sharkey and CPO Robinson. Funny Show.

I loved that show as a kid. I was mad when it was cancelled. Don Rickles is one of the greatest comedians of all time.

Loved it!! It used to crack me up!! mom didn't ike Rickles cuz his humor could be mean...I don't like "mean", but it fit his character and it always came back on him!!!

I think some TV station or cable network needs to bring CPO Sharkey back to life so the new generation can see CPO Sharkey reruns. |

Rickles is funny in anything he's been in in my opinion. Even that dreadful Richard Lewis sitcom.

Don Rickles...one of the 60's and 70's best comic supporting players. Most any show that he would guest on would become electrically charged. I remember him blasting the unfunny Smothers Brothers, and his turns on "Get Smart" and "F-Troop" and "I dream of Jeannie" alone distinguish him apart from the crowd. "CPO Sharkey" may have fallen victim to many things...I don't remember the writing. Maybe it sucked. Just having Don Rickles act mad isn't funny without good writing. The nature of T.V. in the 70's....It's a shame that Don wasn't in his own sitcom earlier in the 60's when he was younger and the market was open to more physical comedy, a thing that Don also did well. Second Banana syndrome...Perhaps Don should have been part of a stronger ensemble cast, someone who could rival him for screen presence. In my humble opinion, that's the problem with too many sitcoms. Star one stand up comic, add some actors, avoid anything that made the stand up comic funny, shake, spread on thick, then yawn. Don Adams and Don Rickles were Navy buddies from Korea or WW2, imagine what a sitcom they could of had together after "Get Smart"! Don Adams low key approach along side of Rickles prickliness would have been perfect. Too bad ego gets in the way of such projects. "Friends" could never have happened had those young stars not been basically "green" when it began. T.V.needs more comedy "teams". Larry Storch, Don Knotts, Don Adams, Louie Nye....all good second bananas, good as ensemble, but perhaps, not all "star" material for sitcoms.
BTW...I'd love to see "CPO Sharkey" again. It was on around the time of another, crude, videotaped sitcom about a bunch of guys in prison. All I remember is it had a Hispanic ringleader and some dumb prisoner who always "got" jokes 2 scenes sfter they were told. Anyone remember this?

Another happy memory here about sitting around in my youth with the family and enjoying great laughs. If you are from NYC, you might remember that the 1977 blackout hit at 9:26PM just at the conclusion of an episode of CPO Sharkey.
Would love to catch this somewhere on TV. |
