'Idol's' Diana Still Determined
UPDATED: 1:23 PM PDT June 16, 2004 "American Idol" runner-up Diana DeGarmo turns 17 on Wednesday and she is busier than ever! Diana is already in the recording studio working on her upcoming album and even though she didn't win the "Idol" crown, Access Hollywood found out she hasn't given up her competitive spirit. "Watch out, I'm coming to get ya on the albums," Diana said, in a message to "Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino. "We'll see how it goes." Just a friendly little message, hinting at the rivalry that still exists between the two former "Idol" contestants who have spent little time together since the show ended. "It's funny," Diana told Access. "Fantasia and I are on such crazy schedules all the time that the only time we see each other is like if I'm coming out of one interview and she's going in." In fact, DeGarmo's schedule is so tiring, she actually dozed off during a recording session in New York after two days of work with singer Melissa Manchester. The two were working on Diana's remake of Melissa's hit, "Don't Cry Out Loud." It's the second song she has recorded for her album, which is due out later this year. Diana's first single is scheduled to come out June 22 through RCA Records, according to the record company's Web site. And at 17, Diana said she would rather model her career after someone like Celine Dion rather than, say, Britney Spears, who left a lasting impression on a pre-teen DeGarmo. "I remember I asked my mom, I was like, 'Do you think her mom really lets her out of the house looking like that?' Because I know my mom wouldn't," Diana confessed. "But, hey, if you can do it -- go for it man. More power to ya! I couldn't pull that off."
