Rhoda Question

I didn't ask this on the Rhoda board because it's not as active as this one but I just wated to know why was Rhoda's Wedding a Big Deal when she got her own show? Was it because she could never get a man on Mary Tyler Moore?

Well, I wasn't alive during the series' original run, but from what I know of the character of Rhoda, I think it probably was a big thing because the audience knew her before "Rhoda. They knew how badly she wanted to be married. As you say, she had had no luck in that department before her own show. Plus, a lot of women identified with her (Many still do), so people were thrilled that she had finally "made it after all." (Excuse the cliche, I just had to do it LOL)

OK thanks. I just was wondering why would Howard Cosell be interested in watching the wedding. That episode was so HYPED UP in 1974 according to my MOM.

I remember that was the title page in the TV papers then and Rhoda was on the cover. You have to understand, there were no such thing as reality shows; Rhoda spun off from MTM and yes, she finally got hitched. It ranked very high in the ratings from what I remember.

Tv then was a lot different from now. Thank goodness for tvland.

The show got boring immediately after the wedding. David Groh and Valerie Harper were not a good TV married couple. They were not compatible. On Valerie's other series, Valerie/The Hogan Family, there was more romantic chemistry with Josh Taylor, her TV husband, compared to David Groh. The only good episode after the wedding was when Mary popped up on Rhoda unannounced when Rhoda and Joe were going away for the weekend. The second season of Rhoda's marriage was bad. It seems like the writers did not know what to do with Rhoda as a married woman.

Usually TV Sitcom Weddings are shown in a series Finale instead of the first season-LOL
