It seemed she'd gotten the big house from a former husband but until the series' end when she became a US Representative, I never heard of her working outside the home- despite her loudly declaring it was her right. Walter always seemed to teeter on bankrupcy and Carol's paycheck wasn't enough for her and Phillip to move out so how were they able to maintain that house and go through four housekeepers?

It appeared to me that she was a house wife. The 25 eps i watched so far did not mention anything about Maude having a job. Only Carol and Walter. |

She did have a job where she was the only woman working with three men. But no career until she became a U.S. Representative.
Here's the link to that episode: Maude The Boss |

Somehow I doubt the income from a single week's work (in 1974) managed to sustain the family for four more years. Ironic that Maude always made wisecracks about Walter's store but didn't actually contribute to the family income until the show's end.
Also, I couldn't blame the others for being furious at her for gutting Phillip's college fund to put together Henry Fonda's campaign- especially since she seems to have contributed zilch to it in the first place! How liberated is it to expect other folks' monies to support your causes and do nothing to actually earn any money yourself?
