I know what "playing the field" means. But what Mrs. Garrett means "as long as you don't try to pitch and hit at the same time".

I'm REALLY not sure. But could as long as you don't pitch...that might mean like, going out with someone, and hit at the same time, mean like get really serious with someone??

What Mrs. G was trying to say, is that it is fine to date several people at the same time. However, you should not be getting serious with 2 or more of them at the same time and leading one of them on.
