We liked her. She gave Ed a new sparring partner & Chico a new friend...

I know a lot had been said at the time why the producers felt it necessary to introduce Della Rogers into the ensemble. By the third season, the producers felt that Ed Brown needed someone to gripe at, a role Chico originally played the first two seasons. Some critics of the show like to point to Freddie's escallating drug use as a reason Freddie wasn't up to the job of being an irritant for Ed anymore, but I would like to think it was because the raport between Chico and Ed was becoming more of a father and son and with their changing relationship and newfound respect for one another, another character was needed to make the cranky old garage owner cranky again. And Della was a brilliant move, IMHO. Her character was a strong woman at a time when there wasn't that many role models of strong women. But she could be sensitive to the needs of others as well. I think Della and Jack worked well together, even after Freddie's passing. True, the premise of the show changed at that point, and never really went anywhere after that, but I don't think this could be blamed on Della. She was a great addition to the cast.

I totally agree!!!! she was a great addition, i absolutely loved her in the episode where she and Chico tried to get that southern belle nurse away from Ed....I laughed so much during that episode, when she called Ed her doll baby!
and the look on Chico's face when that nurse called him a brown boy!

I agree with you Luckymama. I think the reason Della was added was because Freddie and Ed had grown so close..more like father and son..that there was no use in making that relationship seem like a pain...because you could tell they had grown to love each other. Della was a nice addition.

Hey illusion, like his name says, he loves to "analyze" the shows. Just overlook a few of those things.
As for Della, I like her being added because during the time she was there, the show took on a more mature tone. Chico was starting to grow up and find himself and Ed was actually being more of a father than a comedy partner.
