I may be reaching for ideas, but hey, it's still an interesting topic. What's your favorite Non-English language song? I wasn't gonna include Macarena since there is some English in there, but these are the ones I came up with when thinking of songs done completely in a foreign language that became popular in America.
Makeda - Les Nubians 99 Luftballons - Nena Sukiyaki - Kyu Sakamoto Macarena - Los Del Rio La Bamba - Richie Valens/Los Lobos Oye Como Va - Santana Soul Makossa - Manu Dibango |

*sings* Oye como va mi ritmo...
But I love music from other countries. I especially like Spanish music. Selena and Shakira are the best in the Spanish market...imo. |

Numbers - Kraftwerk
There are a whole lotta languages on that one! Including some English, but very little. One, two. That's it!

Has to be "Oye Como Va!"
Love Santana. I also like the one I think its called "Dominic" it is from the 1960's and was sung by nuns. Also "Volare". again my spelling of these songs may not be correct. I like Les Nubians too! Great question Vashti!

I am impressed that you listed "Sukiyaki." From 1963, btw. Something I heard on a radio program years ago. When a name had to be chosen for that song, someone (the producer, maybe) was asked to name a Japanese word to call this song. The only one he could think of was "sukiyaki," so that's what the song was called!
On your list, "LaBamba" would be a very close second for me. |

Ipicked "Oye Como Va" (Spanish for "Hear How It Goes"- it was written by Tito Punete). By the way, where are all the French-language songs? Chantez-vous? And would Fairport Convention's "Si Tu Dois Partir" - Bob Dylan's English-language song "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" translated into French - count?
