"Three Sisters" is about three grown sisters, who are faced with the fact that their widowered father, George Thompson (Ed Asner) is dying of cancer. The sisters are Barbara Thompson-Malone (Suzanne Somers), Paula Thompson-Broderick (Judith Light), and Teresa Thompson-Baldwin (Joanna Kerns). Barb, Paula, and Teresa must fly go stay with their father, who lives in Stepford, Connecticut (same town that Teresa and her family lives in). Barb and Paula decide to temporarily move in with Teresa, her hubby, and her daughter until their dad either gets better or passes on. Barb, Paula, and Teresa must find a way to put their differences aside and start acting like adults.
In the season finale, George takes a turn for the worst, as one girl is busy standing by her dad's side (Teresa), as one girl is frantically planning thier dad's funeral which makes everyone upset (Barb), and as one girl (Paula) feels useless and wants to return home but when she does, George loses hope and then suddenly passes on.

Barbara is 55 years old and is the eldest daughter, who lives with her husband Pete Malone (Tom Selleck) in Boston, Massachuetts. All of Barbara and Pete's kids are out of the house, married, and starting families of their own. Pete and Barb have three kids: Trevor, Christine, and Katie. (The kids are reoccuring guests, appear often separately.) Paula is 54 years old and is the middle child, who lives with her husband, Tony Broderick (Tony Danza) in Concord, Connecticut. Tony and Paula have two kids: Matt and Jake. (The kids are reoccuring guests, appear often separately.) Teresa is 51 years old and is the youngest daughter, who lives with her husband, Michael Baldwin (Tim Allen) and their youngest child, Ashley in Stepford, Connecticut. Michael and Teresa have two kids: Heather and Ashley. Heather lives in her own apartment cross town with her live-in boyfriend, Todd.
