Question How many episodes...

...do you watch a show to decide if you really like it or not?

I try to give a sitcom at least three episodes before I decide whether or not I really like it.

Let's see:

NewsRadio - I was sold after watching 1 episode.

Wings - I became a true fan after watching 2 episodes. Although I had watched the show on and off for most of the time the show was on.

Chico and the Man - I watched a few but I just kept watching it and eventually liked it.

Just Shoot Me! - I bought the DVD and watched the first 3 episodes and decided I don't like the show. It just doesn't make me laugh.

****

For the general show, 2 episodes. The first episode is usually boring, since it tries to explain the show. The second episode is more of a first episode in that it's the first one with the regular format.

I decided Full House was funny after watching two episodes.
After 2 episodes of Cheers I decided I hated the show.
And with Whos The boss? it only took me one episode to decide that I loved the show.

More often than not if I don't like the first episode of a show than I won't bother watching any more.

I watched one episode of Three's Company an loved it. Same with Leave it to Beaver. I watched 3 episodes of Cheers and liked it. I watched 2 episodes of Oliver Beene and loved it. I watched one episode of Arrested Development and didn't like it but watched another and thought it was OK.

It usually takes me about 3 episodes, which can vary because a show can start out with some great episodes, then go down hill.

It only took me about 3 episodes to be a Boy Meets World fan 4 ever

I agree with mr roper and Brent in that, unless I'm specifically watching the show because I know it will be cancelled soon and I'm also taping it for my archives (Charlie Lawrence) I give a show one episode and then give up.

Rarely, however, does a show have such an awful first episode that I don't come back for the second.

If its a NEW show, one episode is my decision.

For old sitcoms, I watch about 3 or 4, and if hasn't grabbed my interest by then -- its over.

Solomon, I know you hate Cheers.... but, this wouldnt offend me as a fan -- make a post on the Cheers board explaining exactly why you don't like it.
It's got a "hip" character.... Sam.
It's got the mean/somewhat evil character.... Carla.
Id just like to see what you think about it.
But if its just going to be a "it was boring and I fell asleep" thread, then dont bother.
And tell them Tim sent you -- in order not to piss anyone off.
Or not.... whatever you want to do.

"Just Shoot Me" is right, that's what I needed after watching that show. I gave it a chance 10, 15 times.... but I NEVER laughed. There's 7 and a half hours of my life I'll never have back.

Adam, do you plan on keeping your DVD, or selling it??
I know you buy almost every sitcom on DVD.... I was just wondering if you'll keep a show you don't like.

Usually only one. Either it grows on me right away or it doesn't grow on me at all in most cases.
