not being able to comprehend what you're reading? i've had this problem since like 4th grade that if i'm reading something that doesn't interest me, i can read the words but i can't focus on what it's saying no matter how hard i try, and when i'm done reading it i have no idea what i just read. i can comprehend things just fine if it's interesting but otherwise i can't. it's the reason i've been doing so bad in school for the past several years like when we take tests over books or have to read text books. it also affects me in math, i try so hard to pay attention to the board but i can't. yesterday i went to the eye doctor for a check up and i failed the 10th grade (the grade i'll be in next year) reading comprehension test so they gave me a 7th grade one and i missed 2/10. they say it's a disconnection between the eyes and the brain, or something like that.. if there's a word for it or something then yeah i'd like to know more about it.

I had that problem in school too. Whenever we had to read assigned books, if I wasnt interested in it, I wouldnt remember it. So, I did myself the favor of not even reading it . Im not sure if theres some special disorder for it, I just think that, thinks youre not interested in, youre not going to do well in.

There are different "reading disabilities" that you might want to get checked out for.

This is all my opinion and may be completely wrong but: I think there is a difference between "learning disabilities" and "reading disabilities." Since you have no trouble reading things that interest you, I wouldn't think you'd have a severe disability (like a real learning disability), because those tend to affect someone all the time. It's definitely not a matter of being lazy though. Hopefully you can get tested and get treated for whatever problem it is.

yeah the eye doctors say i need reading glasses because they're evil liars and i have to go see them tomorrow so i could ask about it then.

Honestly, Sarah, I think the eye doctor is the wrong person to see. Who you should really see is a teacher or something. I'm sure he/she would be able to direct you to the right person(s). Eye doctors are useless in situations like these, no offense. Don't waste your time and money.

it's stupid that i have to go. i have 20/20 vision according to all the eye tests i've ever taken, what more do i need. i find it funny how all the other eye doctors said there's nothing wrong with my vision and i don't need glasses yet these *******s say i do.. and i've never been to that place before until yesterday and i was wondering where in the heck the building came from. they say i'm "far sided" (or is it near sided? whichever one where you can't see form close up) and that's interesting because they put a thing of tiny letters in front of my face and i read them off perfectly. well they say i have to go there every week for the next 9 months. greedy bitches. and they say that the glasses i need are weaker than the ones you can go buy at wal*mart. then what freaking difference will it make?!! i don't care, i'm not gonna wear them.

I used to have the same problem. Bad at Reading Comprehension.

I had to get glasses because I was far-sided(I used to get headaches all the time when I would read, but the far away vision was GREAT).

When you first mentioned glasses in the other thread, I asked if you were far-sighted (because people who are far-sded can still read the eyechart well), but if you can also read things up close well, then I think that eye doc is full of it too.

Are you easily distracted in other areas of life? Not to be funny but it could be related to attention deficit disorder. Or it could be an issue of not seeing the immediate relevance of the content of what you are being made to read. If you think what you are reading is pointless, it becomes a chore and you kind of zone out.

You might have a learning disability. I made F's in math all the way from Kindergarten to 8th grade. Then in 8th grade they dicovered I had a learning disability in Math. If you are doing
bad in a subject you could try going to the teacher in that suject for help. They will be more likely to help you if you go to them. I had a teacher who thought I was just lazy till she found out I had a Ld. Then she was nicer and I recieved more help.

Is far-sided the same as "far-sighted?" I have never heard of this term before and here I've thought I've heard everything.

Um, we are so alike in problems and stuff lol. I read stuff perfect but when it was like history or something I'd just be out of it. And I'd even re-read but it's still like... I just can't get into and don't get it. When I read stuff like that I always think when I'm done, "what did I just read?". Haha.

yeah i used to be a really good student until i had to start reading stuff and taking tests over it, then i started doing bad in almost everything. i've tried going to teachers after class so they could teach it to me but i still can't focus on it and it hardly helps.

lol that's just how i am. sometimes i can't even understand like 3 sentences. i go over the words really slowly but i still don't get what i'm reading.
