Default Donnie Darko

any other fans of this film in here?

I heard they are reissuing it in theaters as a "Directors Cut". I am curious, I bet it'd be a great theatrical experience, especially with new material. This film is the one that really introduced the world to the greatness of Jake Gyllenhaal, yes he did October Sky and Bubble Boy before this, but I think Donnie Darko is the film that really placed him on the map.

I keep coming across it while flipping through the movie channels. I've watched parts of it several times now, and what I've seen looks interesting. (What's with that rabbit...?!) The only Jake Gyllenhaal film I've seen (in its entirety) so far is The Good Girl, and I thought he was very good in that.

I always forget to look for Donnie Darko when I go to Amazon.com, so I'm going to go and do that now while I'm thinking of it.

Donnie Darko is fantastic. The Director's Cut is also going to get a UK release- I'll definitely go see it. I remember seeing an ad when it was first being released in cinemas and I really wanted to see it- but then hardly any theatres got it.

Have any of you got the dvd- if so, are the deleted scenes any good?

I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE THIS MOVIE.

It made me depressed to no end.

Honestly, it took me a week before I felt the same again. I cried the entire night I saw it. I couldn't sleep.

It's really disturbing.

People have really warped sense of movies. EVERYONE loves it.

Creeeepy! But I liked it. I also thought it was cool that Maggie was cast as his sister. I didn't understand the part with the over-weight girl and she was being made fun of at the bus stop. What did that have to do with the movie?

I just recently saw it. Its the weirdest movie I've ever seen. There isn't a movie that makes you think harder. It hurts my mind when I think about it. I had to read an article on it just to get what happened.

I'm bumping up an old thread here, I know...but I just had to after viewing Donnie Darko for the first time tonight. This movie just may be in my top 5 favorite movies. Here's my sorta half-assed review....SPOILERS MIGHT BE AHEAD, so read at your own risk!

First off, I'm very glad I took the time to browse imdb.com forums to get an idea what this movie was like before I saw it! There were so many things to learn about, like the whole Philosophy of Time Travel in which this movie is based on. One thing I noticed on the website was that the director didn't want there to be one interpretation of the movie, leaving it pretty much open-ended to the viewer based upon their beliefs, opinions, knowledge, etc. I thought that was very cool.

Anyway, here is my interpretation of the movie: Donnie Darko is told by Frank the Bunny (a scary character in a rabbit's costume that appears to him in what seems to be a hallucination) during a sleepwalking episode that the world will end soon (gives him an exact time frame too, one I can't remember offhand). During this first warning of the future, Donnie is somehow saved from being killed from a jet engine that crashes in to his house (which happens to be an object from another universe, known as the future). This corruption in time means the world will have to end and it's Donnie's job to bring the engine back to the other universe and reverse time so that none of this could've ever have happened. During the movie, Donnie meets people in the "real universe" (which is his present world), whom are being manipulated by beings from the future in order for the series of events to occur so Donnie can stop the universe from ending. In fact, everything that occurs in the movie is a subtle nudge so Donnie can set forth the events to save the universe. You really have to pay close attention to all the little details (maybe even watch this movie several times to fully grasp it) about what's going on.

My head is spinning just talking about it I know my theory isn't very clear, but then again it wasn't meant to be since it's my interpretation of it. Alot of people have different views about the movie. I simply loved it and I'm still thinking about it....oh, and still thinking about how hot Jake was....dayyumm

which version did you catch? the theatrical or directors cut version? both are quite different from the other, but both are GREAT. Of course, this makes it a double-dip movie where you need both DVD's since there's totally different extras on each edition (kinda like Sound Of Music, I have both the 2000 Five-Star Edition and the 2005 version I got to review, and I'm keeping both since the goodies are totally different)

Hey there,

I'm not too sure which version it is....I looked at the back of the DVD and it has a list of special features that includes the Director's commentary, loads of deleted scenes, "Mad World" music video, plus tons more...hmm, so I guess the director's cut? Unfortunately I haven't gotten a chance to watch the extras yet but I look forward to it It's such a great movie.

that'd be the original version then, the directors cut has a white slipcover with an x-ray of Jake's body (but you see his face)
