If you read my previous post for the top singles in 1993 you'll notice what a difference one year made in terms of the diversity in the Hot 100 and r&b lists. Here are the songs as ranked by that magazine:

1- End of the Road- Boyz II Men- OK but I never understood why this was so HUGE it was #1 for 13 weeks the longest in the rock era up to that point
2- Baby Got Back- Sir Mix A Lot- I never liked these butt rap records. This is the biggest of that genre 3- Jump- Kriss Kross- this shows that almost anyone can have a hit record 4- Save the Best for Last- Vanessa Williams- pretty enough 5- Baby Baby Baby- TLC- never cared for TLC 6- Tears in Heaven- Eric Clapton- don't like this 10-Just Another Day- Jon Secada- he sounds anguished, it is catchy though top artist: Boyz II Men R&B 1- Come and Talk to Me- Jodeci- never liked this group 2- Honey Love- R Kelly and Public Announcement- this was before R Kelly became an NC17 personality 3- You Remind Me- Mary J Blige- OK, it was from a movie 5- Tell Me What You Want Me to Do- Tevin Campbell- not terrible but nothing special even then 6- Mint Condition's first single, Breakin My Heart Pretty Brown Eyes- nice enough tune and it hit the pop top ten too, beginning of the end for self-contained r&B bands though 8- Somebody Loves You Baby You Know Who It is- Patti Labelle- OK, nothing to rave over 9- Tennessee- Arrested Development- the most interesting song in the r&b to ten. Good tune 10- Stay- Jodeci- YUK Adult Contemporary: 2- Hold On My Heart- Genesis- a bit dreary 3- If You Asked Me to - Celine Dion- liked it alot in 92, not so much now 4- The One- Elton John- never liked this. What in the world happened to this guy's music? His 70s records are so much better than this stuff 6- Restless Heart- Peter Cetera- not too special 7- Beauty and the Beast- Celine Dion/Peabo Bryson- This is the best of the A/C top ten, didn't think much of it in 92 but it is nice for this genre and is much better in hindsight than the Alladin theme |
