What do you all think of these prizewinners and the category in general? For the past 15 years here are the nominees. The artist listed next to the song is not necessarily the person who wrote the tune. The songwriter accepted the trophy. Is anything missing?
1989 If You Don't Know Me By Now- Simply Red- WINNER Superwoman- karyn White Every Little Step- Bobby Brown Miss You Much- Janet Jackson When A Man Loves A Woman- Joe Cocker IMO/NOTE: IF You Don't.... is the best song here but it was 17 years old at the time. When A Man... had no business being here this year 1990 U Can't Touch This- MC Hammer- WINNER Here and Now- Luther Vandross My My My- Johnny Gill I'll Be Good to You- Ray Charles/Chaka Khan Alright- Janet Jackson IMO: Hammer's tune doesn't belong here, Here and Now is a better choice 1991 Power of Love/Love Power- Luther Vandross- WINNER Can You Stop the Rain- Peabo Bryson How Can I Ease the Pain- Lisa Fischer I Wanna Sex U Up- Color Me Badd I'll Take You There- Bebe and Cece Winans and Mavis Staples IMO/NOTE: Vandross' record is a medley of 2 different songs- Love Power was written 24 years earlier yet composer Burt Bacharach wasn't acknowledged at all. Vandross' song is OK, Bryson's tune is practically a pop song. I'll Take You There was written in 1972 1992 End of the Road- Boyz II Men- WINNER Jam- Michael Jackson I'll Be There- Mariah Carey My Lovin- En Vogue Aint to Proud to BEg- TLC IMO/NOTE: After this year no more old compositions in any of the songwriting categories. I'll Be There was 22 years old and is much better than almost any other entry here but it's too old to justifiably win. I could never understand what made End of the Road (which is OK but not great) such an outstanding hit that it would break all kinds of chart records. Jam is more a collection of noises than a coherent song. Tennessee by Arrested Development should have replaced TLC's rap in this field. 1993 That's the way Love Goes- WINNER Little Miracles- Luther Vandross Heaven Knows- Luther Vandross Can We Talk- Tevin Campbell Anniversary- Tony!Toni!Tone! IMO/NOTE: Luther's tunes are obscure if you're not a fan of his music. Janet's tune was the biggest so I guess it won for that reason. Not a strong competition. I'd go for Can We Talk 1994 I'll Make Love to You- Boyz II Men- WINNER You Mean the World to Me- Toni Braxton When Can I See You- Babyface Body and Soul- Anita Baker If That's Your Boyfriend He Wasn't Last Night- Meshell NDegeOcello IMO/NOTE: Babyface wrote the first 3 (and 10 others during these years) so he was in his prime, but his songs all have a certain mundanity to them. Baker's tune was better to me. Again not a very thrilling competition 1995 For Your Love- Stevie Wonder- WINNER Brown Sugar- D'Angelo Red Light Special- TLC Creep-TLC You Can't Run- Vanessa Williams IMO/NOTE: Wonder's tune is old fashioned but i like it a lot better than the others 1996 Exhale (Shoop Shoop)- Whitney Houston- WINNER Sittin Up In My Room- Brandy You're Making Me High- Toni Braxton You Put A Move on My Heart- Tamia Your Secret love- Luther Vandross IMO/NOTE: I always got the feeling that Babyface put the shoop shoop into the lyrics because he couldn't think up lyrics for that part of the song. I guess it's the best one here this year 1997 I Believe I Can Fly- R Kelly- WINNER Stomp- Kirk Franklin and God's Property On and On- Erykah Badu No Diggity- BLACKstreet Honey- Mariah Carey IMO/NOTE: I guess Kelly's tune is the best. NO Diggity was a hit in 1996 not 1997. Stomp and Honey feature samples from old songs 1998 Doo Wop (That Thing)- Lauryn Hill- WINNER All My Life- KCi and Jojo A Rose is Still A Rose- Aretha Franklin Lean On Me- Kirk Franklin, Family, Bono, Crystal Lewis, R Kelly, Mary J Blige The Boy Is Mine- Brandy/Monica IMO/NOTE: Hill's tune had the most buzz, but could really have been a rap category winner instead. Lean On Me was up for the general best song award too though it wasn't a hit single. Brandy's tune was up for record of the year but is overrated to me 1999 No Scrubs- TLC- WINNER All that I Can Say-Mary J Blige Bills Bills Bills- Destiny's Child It's Not Right But it's OK- Whitney Houston Heartbreak Hotel- Whitney Houston/Kelly Price/Faith Evans IMO/NOTE: No men here and except for Mary J Blige all the songs are rather anti-male in their sentiments 2000 Say My Name- Destiny's Child- WINNER Thong Song- Sisqo He Wasn't Man Enough- Toni Braxton Untitled (How Does it Feel)- D'Angelo Bag Lady- Erykah Badu IMO/NOTE: I don't like any of these so I guess it's irrelevant to choose. Braxton's tune has something to say though. D'Angelo's was famous more for the naked video and Sisqo for the women's rear ends in the video 2001 Fallin- Alicia Keys- WINNER Video- India.Arie Love of My Life- Brian McKnight Get Ur Freak On- Missy Elliot Hit Em Up Style- Blu Cantrell Didnt Cha Know- Erykah Badu IMO/NOTE: Video is a much more interesting and original song than Fallin which borrows from James Brown without acknowledging him. Had Video won it easily would have been one of the best winners in this field in the last 15 years. McKnight's tune has him singing in an annoying falsetto 2002 Love of My Life (Ode to Hip Hop)- Erykah Badu/Common- WINNER Good Man- India.Arie Take A Message- Remy Shand Floetic- Floetry Be Here- Raphael Saadiq/D'Angelo IMO/NOTE: The most obscure collection ever. Of the years 89-03 this year's winner is the best 2003 Crazy in Love- Beyonce and Jay-Z- WINNER Dance With My Father- Luther Vandross Rock With You (Aw Baby) - Ashanti Comin from Where I'm From- Anthony Hamilton Danger- Erykah Badu IMO/NOTE: I like Dance With My Father better than Crazy but Dance won the general song of the year award. Ashanti's record is a joke nominee. |
