Post Why Jo!?!

WHY?!?! Everyone is obsessed with her!! Aren't there any Tootie fans, besides me? Well, anyways I don't know why she is so popular. I don't hate her but she isn't my fav character! What is it with her?
My fav characters of the regular girls in order:

1. Tootie
2. Natalie
3. Blair
4. Jo

------------------
Blair: I’m an adult

Jo: Oh sure, most adults I know stomp their feet when they don’t get Chinese food!
------------------
Tootie: I'm finding out who I am, I'm black.
Jo: No kiddin'?
Blair: We thought you were Suzanne Somers!

Jo was a great character and thats why she is my favorite.Plus in my opinion Jo saved FOL.I'm not saying that she was the only reason it lasted as long as it did but do you really think that it would have lasted as long as it did with just Blair,Tootie,Natalie and one of the first season girls?

I'm a huge Tootie and Natalie fan. I do
like Jo and Blair, but they aren't my
favorites, no disrespect to the "Jo" and
"Blair" fans. As far as Jo saving FOL, at
first she did but after a while "ALL" the
girls made the show a success. We should
give credit to the other cast members.
If it weren't for the 1st season of FOL,
there wouldn't have been "no" FOL. That's
just my opinion.

Well, I can see why Jo is a favorite among people, but I think that the other characters have something special to offer too.

I know seriously you guys.... Jo In my opinion was the most realistic person on the show .... along with Natalie. tootie no offense was just plain annoying to me LOL and blair was annoying too... she was so snotty!! but i guess she made laugh alot also... no offense to you tootie and blair fans... I really like Jo personally... I dont mind the other three. Jo for some reason really touched me in a way where I can totally relate to her!! I mean Its like when thinking im always like.... hmmm what would Jo or Jinny do in this situation? Im just a total nancy mckeon fan.. im sorry... was she really the most popular character on FOL ... cause if she was... i wouldnt be surprised... its just amazing how so many teenagers today have no clue who she is... and im 17 and i just found out who she was last august im obsessed over her now LOL

I love all the FOL characters, but Jo is the one that saved the show.

Blair wouldn't be such an as entertaining a character without her motorbike-riding rival.

Then again, witout Blair, who would Jo have picked on?

In any case, Jo is the one who saved the show from being cancelled after 1 season, therefore lots of people are disappointed that she wasn't in it.

I wrote to Nacny McKeon myself and tried to convince her to be in the reunion. Oh well! At least she signed my photos for me!

My favorite character was always Mrs. Garrett but I will do my best to put the Jo facination in perspective:

Jo came in at the right place and the right time. When the new director and writers came in under the direct orders "write like the girls are 30 years old!" that was the perfect way to utilise Nancy McKeon's considerable talents. Had she been an original under the original writing team she would have been just another character that was axed prior to season 2. Nancy McKeon and the new writers saved the show collectively. (This gave Mrs. Garrett's housemother character and sensebilities some real significance with the more relevant writing.) Jo also didn't hurt my young eyes either as she was the most attractive of the Eastland girls! (Hey, I was only 9 years old when I discovered the show in the early 80's!!!)

Ultimately Jo's character did save FoL to a certain point. By 1986 however, she had lost her edge and the dynamics had changed. Her oneliners had faded, her looks were now beginning to resemble Blair's. (Since Jo was always the anti-Blair this was a bit of a death knell for her character.) The writing remained strong to an extent but Nat and Tootie and to a lesser extent Andy's characters and the depth they had attained pretty much kept the show alive in the last 2 years of FoL.

As a result of the night and day change from season one to season two there will always be more Jo fans then any other character on FoL. Here is my list from top to bottom:

1. Mrs. Garrett
2. Jo
3. Natalie
4. Blair
5. Tootie
6. Andy
7. Sue Ann from season 1

L8ER G8ERS!

Mr. Garrett

I think one reason why everybody was so into Jo, at least during it's original run, is that there were no other strong role models for young girls. This was in the days before Mia Hamm and the WNBA. The A-Team and Dukes of Hazzard were the big things for crying out loud!

Everybody identifies with Jo, myself included, but I was really more like a cross between Natalie and Tootie. Nat's insecurities and Tootie's naivette. But Jo was who I wanted to be. She was very self-assured and that's not something that's common during the hormonal hell known as adolesence.

All 4 of the girls brought something to the show and I don't think it would have worked if any of them were missing. Jo may have 'saved' the show, but she couldn't have done it without the interaction of the other characters.
