Default music rights on DVD

okay, I just read today that Miami Vice, a tv series that was basically a televised 1980's radio station, is coming out to DVD with all the music entact.

If there's no problems with this show, which had on average 4-5 copyrighted songs per episode, then what is the issue with shows like WKRP, Ally McBeal, the latter seasons of Malcolm In The Middle and uncut (aka, videos included) episodes of Beavis And Butt-Head?

Happy Days is coming in August, another show where music played a big role (at least in the early years), hopefully its in tact.

well, I remember reading a lot of the 50's songs played on the series were 70's recordings by soundalike artists, so that alone probably made it a lot cheaper to use

My number one most wanted tv-dvd is the 80's show Fame. I was hoping that there wouldn't be such a big problem clearing music rights since there was alot of original music on that show. There are probably clearance issues involved with that show also, unfortunately.

As far as music videos being included on Beavis & Butthead, I can understand the videos being held back. That's a case of artists' images (visual) as well as the music being included. It's one thing to be included in a cartoon on broadcast tv, but I bet there are artists who were the subjects of B and B's ridicule who would want some sort of compensation for allowing their videos to be included on a dvd release. Also, it'd be weird for say, a few seconds of Paula Abdul's Straight Up video to be included on a Beavis & Butthead dvd while Paula Abdul's fans (yes, they're out there) would say "where's our Paula Abdul video collection?"

If you go here (TVShowsOnDVD.com) you'll see an article about music and Miami Vice. From that article:

Quote:
"We understand your want and need for the release of Miami Vice on DVD format. However, as we have been attempting to make this possible, it has become nearly impossible due to music clearance/royalties involved in satisfying the artists/musicians. This issue was a MAJOR contingency for the production of consumer DVD boxed sets from other popular shows as you may have noticed in your local retail stores right now. Although Miami Vice was very popular in the early to mid 1980s, there were MANY songs from various artists utilized in the production of the series as every one of you should know. Unfortunately, at this moment there are NO plans of releasing Miami Vice on DVD. We are very sorry...we have NO intention of releasing Miami Vice onto DVD at anytime in the near future."
That was in July of 2003. The latest news is a rumor saying that the show is coming to DVD. No confirmation. And even if it is being released on DVD we have no way of knowing how much it will cost. If the original music is included, who knows, it may cost a lot of money.

well, this was posted today

In recent news like this report, we've been getting more and more hints that Miami Vice is hitting DVD very soon. Now, we have GREAT news from one of our most dedicated readers (and story contributors), who spoke to a studio spokesperson at the annual Licensing Show, held in New York City.

"Todd S", who's one of the earliest registered members at TVShowsOnDVD (and has often tipped us off to various bits of news), posted this story at the Home Theater Forum discussion website. In it, he mentions our last Miami Vice news post, linked above, and builds on that information. Here is Todd's TV-on-DVD news from that story:

I just got back from the Licensing show at the Javitz Center in NY. This is where companies come to license out their properties. All of the studios were there. I was able to find out the following tv info:

-A follow up to David & Gord's info. Miami Vice season one should be coming out by the end of the year. With season two early next year. Supposedly, with the music intact. Just be aware she wasn't in charge of this. But, she did give me a promo sheet of "Retro is Back" and their were 5 shows on them...Knight Rider, The Munsters, Battlestar Galactica, Leave it to Beaver and Miami Vice.

-Over at MGM a rep said he heard that the New Outer Limits show will be coming out in season sets. But, he didn't have a time frame yet.

I asked Todd if he could share the promo sheet he mentioned, and he was happy to send me a scan of it. On it, nothing about the shows (or films) were mentioned other than to go over the premise of the series and promote how popular it is with potential DVD buyers (don't forget, this gathering was aimed at industry insiders). Here is a close-up of the Vice section:

As you can see (well, you may have to squint), the second paragraph says "The show's memorable music, fast cars, and trend-setting clothes all contributed to the culture and personality of the rockin' 80's." It seems unlikely that they would be promoting the music of the show so obviously if there were plans to water it down on the DVD release. So this hand-out, while not very specific, seems to agree with what Todd was told by the spokesperson at the show.

Here's a look at the overall layout of the promo sheet, front and back. If everything Todd S. was told is true, then Vice fans will be very very happy, and pretty darn soon! Thank you, Todd, for all of this info. Stay tuned for more developments, as they happen.
